Suspected JeM leader remanded

Staff Correspondent Madrasa teacher Moulana Mohammad Yunus, a suspected leader of Kashmir separatist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), was placed on a six-day remand yesterday. Detective Branch (DB) of Police on Thursday arrested Yunus, 48, who they claim was designated to recruit Rohingyas for the outfit. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam granted the six-day remand after the detectives produced Yunus before the court seeking a 10-day remand to interrogate him. DB police and court sources said, Yunus was shown arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station in the capital under section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedures (CrPc). DB officials also said they were preparing to file another case under the Anti-Terrorism Acts. The officials in their prayer mentioned that Yunus should be remanded for extracting information about the Bangladeshi networks of the JeM, which was banned in Pakistan in 2002. Yunus, a teacher of Moulavir Kata Al-Givari Adarsha Dakhil Madrasa in Cox's Bazar, had been working as a local coordinator of the terrorist organisation, said DB Deputy Commissioner Monirul Islam on Thursday. His job was to recruit Rohingyas and locals of Cox's Bazar for his group and have them carry out JeM's activities in Bangladesh, Monirul said. He said the arrest was carried out following information gleaned from Rohingyas, who earlier tried to depart from Shahjalal International Airport on fake Bangladeshi passports. "The detained JeM leader had been carrying out his activity on instructions of Saber Ahmmed, ex-principal of the madrasa, who has been living in Pakistan for the last few years," Monirul said, adding, "Financial support for his activities came from Pakistan and Saber is technically the boss of Yunus." The DB official claimed that Saber was previously involved in Jamaat-e-Islami and that he had paid a visit to Bangladesh in July last.
