    Empirical Formula

    Procedure :

    1. A clean crucible is weighed together with its lid. 2. A magnesium ribbon is cleaned with a piece of sandpaper. 3. The cleaned ribbon is rolled up and put inside the crucible. 4. Their total weight is determined.

    The crucible is heated strongly until the magnesium ribbon starts to burn. 6. The lid of the crucible is lifted from time to time. This is to let fresh air enter the crucible. The magnesium is heated until it does not glow any more. 7. The crucible with its lid and the content is allowed to cool and then weighed 8. The heating, cooling and weighing processes are repeated until a constant mass is achieved.
