Statistics solution for test statistics:

An independent-measures research study was used to compare two treatment conditions with n=12 participants in each treatment. The first treatment had a mean of M= 55 with a variance of s2 =8, and the second treatment had M=52 and s2 =4. Do these data indicate a significant difference between the two treatments? Use a two tailed test with =.05. (note : because the two samples are the same size, the pooled variance is simply the average of the two sample variances.) Solution: Null Hypothesis (Ho): There is no difference between the two treatments. Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): There is difference between the two treatments. Pooled variance = (s12 + s22)/ 2 = (8 + 4)/2 = 6 Pooled standard deviation, Sp = (s12 + s22)/ 2 = 6 = 2.449 Test Statistics t = (M1 M2)/Sp 1/n1 + 1/n2 = (55 52)/2.4491/12 + 1/12 = 3/1 =3 Degrees of freedom, df = n1 + n2 2 = 12 + 12 2 = 22 Using t-tables, the critical value is t (0.05/2, 22) = t (0.025, 22) = 2.074 Since test statistics lie outside the critical value, we reject the null hypothesis.
