I am so pleased to welcome you to the start of our 2012-2013 season at Lyric Opera of Kansas City. We have much to celebrate this season, including a wonderful series of productions in the glorious Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Just to catch up, over the summer we moved into our permanent home at 1725 Holmes Street, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Richard J. Stern Center. This new Opera Center is composed of two buildings, the Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building and the Beth Ingram Administrative Building. Within these two buildings, we have the capacity to realize our artistic goals, accommodating the entire process of opera production, from artistic planning through full production realization.

As I write to you, I have just returned from a visit to our Opera Camp, taking place in the Production Arts Building. How inspiring it was to hear 78 young people perform beautifully and talk about their transformative musical and social experiences during their time with us. I only wish that you could see these young people and feel their excitement. We begin our artistic season with Madama Butterfly. It would be difficult to imagine a more celebrated and admired Puccini work, with the possible exception of Turandot. Surely, this one opera has to top everyones favorite list, combining lyrical music with the touching story of Cio-Cio-San and her love. Experiencing this opera creates new opera lovers and causes the already converted to fall in love with opera all over again. A woman, a man, a child, family pressures and secrets the stuff of everyday life. As we look ahead to this coming year, I am grateful for the opportunity to come to Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and to join this great opera family. I look forward to meeting you as the season begins and sharing thoughts, hopes and dreams for our future. Warmly,

Participating schools may choose one of two operas: Born To Freedom, a story of young people discovering and paying tribute to the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or Never Lost A Passenger, the story of Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad.

Lyric Opera provides opera instruction for high school students chosen to audition by their vocal music teachers. These gifted students receive training in Italian, German, French, and English diction, singing technique, acting, audition preparation and stage etiquette.

Elementary school students sing and act in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Spelling Bee.
Participating classrooms are visited by professional singers who help the students prepare for their opera debuts. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Spelling Bee is an adaptation by Joseph and Paula Winans, with music by Mozart, Bizet, Rossini, Verdi, and Gilbert & Sullivan. Simple costumes are created, and the class of new opera stars and four Lyric Opera Express performers take the stage to perform for the rest of the school. Teachers, assisted by Lyric Opera educators, design their own package for their students based upon the production areas they want them to learn. Choose from an array of opera singers, make-up artists, scenic designers and wig specialists to visit a school. Depending upon the workshop design, students can become familiar with the sound of trained opera singers voices, learn about voice production with a group mini-voice lesson, experience a make-up or wig demonstration, and learn about scenic and costume design, careers in opera, and audience etiquette. Defying ODDs
What are the odds of success that a story takes hold of an opera composer, stirs his or her psyche to such a heightened level that he/she turns prodigious musical creative talents loose over many hours, days, weeks and months scribbling dots on music paper (or nowadays, inputting data into a computer program), that, after completion, is turned over to a host of other artists to learn, memorize, sing, play, design costumes and scenery, at the statistically slim chance that you, the paying public, might want to come see it? And how many times? Once? Twice? Several? In our modern times, one adds would you buy the CD? DVD? I am far from being a mathematician, but my practical experience in this profession leads me to believe that we are talking about odds similar to winning Powerball.

Giacomo Puccini clearly decimated these formidable odds, not just once, but repeatedly, between his opera composition years of 1884 and 1926. Of his dozen operas, nine have been and are performed annually around the world, and four are given an almost blinding multiplicity of performances yearly by every organization that claims to call itself an opera company. The New Grove Dictionary of Opera states simply he was the most successful composer of Italian opera after Verdi. I believe we choose to visit or repeatedly return to great works of art in part due to their multifaceted richness. In the case of Madama Butterfly, we have a nave, tragic love story set in an historically all-too-common political situation, expressed through a flexible musical style that beguiles in the dialogue scenes as well as in the traditional arias, duets and trios and ensembles. Our current physical presentation, the brainchild of the late great British opera director Colin Graham, looks at the work from a traditional yet somewhat elegantly rarified perspective. Among our gifted cast of artists, returning director Mark Streshinsky (Julius Caesar, 2008; The Marriage of Figaro, 2011), himself a former assistant of Mr. Graham, enlivens the production with his own perspective on this tragedy. We are eager to present returning tenor Dinyar Vania (Carmen, 2010) as Pinkerton, and the exciting role debut of Cuban-American soprano Elizabeth Caballero as the title character, after her triumph here last season as Li in Turandot. We hope that these performances of this masterwork will move you, either as the first or the umpteenth encounter with this poignant, tender, musical drama.

Continuing a legaCy
Im delighted to return to Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Closing the final season at the Lyric Theatre with my updated production of The Marriage of Figaro was a highlight of my career. Having the privilege to follow with an opera that I love, in the Kauffman Center, is made even more wonderful by the fact that this production was created by the late Colin Graham. I consider Colin a mentor even though I only knew him the last few years of his life. Colin was a stalwart at the English National Mark StreShinSky Director Opera and was awarded an Order of the British Empire. A collaborator with Benjamin Britten, he is the original director of many of Brittens later works. He was a talented librettist and directed over 40 new operas with major new productions at The Met, San Francisco and many others. I first met Colin when I was hired to be his assistant on a 1999 production of Otello in Saint Louis. Colin was notoriously hard on his assistants, so it was with great relief that he took to me and was pleased with my work. I helped revive the Otello for him in Omaha and then worked with him on The Ballad of Baby Doe at New York City Opera. By the time of the City Opera production, Colin was beginning to deteriorate, and a weak heart forced him to reduce his schedule. He had, however been working on a new opera of Anna Karenina, commissioned for the opening of the new opera house in Miami. He called and asked if I would assist him on the production and be ready to take it over from him should he be unable to direct it. I quickly fell in love with the piece and decided to accept his offer, turning down some pretty plum directing jobs to do it. He also asked me to take over his production of The Marriage of Figaro for Michigan Opera Theater. As time went on, it became clear that Colin would not be able to travel to Miami. I spent four days with him working on the piece in the hospital he never left. At the end he wrote me a wonderful note thanking me for loving the piece and that he was so happy to have given it to the right person. I was beyond honored. Anna Karenina was a wonderful success, though made sad by the news during rehearsals that Colin had passed away. In staging his Madama Butterfly, it is wonderful to discover little touches that remind me of him. He liked working in an abstract environment and this set is only evocative of a Japanese locale. His love for source material is also in evidence. For example, the costume of Prince Yamadori is a foreign dress military suit, not at all Japanese. In the play by David Belasco, Yamadori is only visiting his home country, he is very well traveled and spends much of his time in New York. Having also studied both the Belasco play and the short story that it was based on, Im excited to see how that will eventually inform our staging. I hope you enjoy what I believe is part of the legacy of a great man. Lyric Opera Of Kansas city 29

MadaMa Butterfly: The sTory

Act I - Nagasaki, Japan, early 1900s
U.S. Navy Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton has leased a home overlooking Nagasaki Harbor. The marriage broker, Goro, has also procured for him three servants and a wife, the geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly. The 999-year lease, which applies to both Butterfly and the house, can be cancelled at a months notice. When the American consul, Sharpless, arrives to witness the marriage ceremony, he chides Pinkerton for his casual attitude toward life. He points out that Butterfly is truly in love with him. Although Pinkerton seems infatuated with his young bride, he proposes a toast to his future true wife in America. Butterfly and the other geishas are heard in the distance coming up the hill. She and the bridal party enter and introductions are exchanged. She tells Pinkerton that her family was once wealthy, but then they fell on hard times. Her relatives bustle in, expressing their opinions of the marriage. In a quiet moment, Butterfly shows the bridegroom her few earthly treasures, and reveals that she has secretly forsaken her religion for his. Pinkerton is stunned to discover the sword with which her father had committed ritual suicide. The marriage ceremony is performed, and the guests begin to toast in celebration. Butterflys uncle, a priest, bursts in, cursing her for having renounced her ancestral religion. Horrified at Butterflys decision, the guests abandon her. In the moonlit garden, Pinkerton consoles a tearful Butterfly, and the two sing of their love for one another.
Act II - three years later
Though Lieutenant Pinkerton has been gone for nearly three years, Butterfly waits patiently for his return. When Suzuki reveals how little money they have left, Butterfly urges her to have faith. She is certain her husband will return from America, as promised. Sharpless arrives with a letter from the Lieutenant, but before he can read it, Goro enters with wealthy Prince Yamadori, who wishes to marry Butterfly. The girl dismisses them, insisting her American husband has not deserted her. Sharpless tries unsuccessfully to read the letter, and urges Butterfly to give up and marry Prince Yamadori. A stunned Butterfly rushes out and returns with her child, Dolore (Sorrow), saying that Pinkerton will surely return once he learns of his son. If he does not, she vows that she would rather die than to live as a geisha again. Sharpless leaves, promising to tell Pinkerton of their son. A cannon report echoes to announce the arrival of a ship in the harbor, which Butterfly recognizes as Pinkertons. Joyfully, she orders Suzuki to fill the house with flowers. As the sky darkens, she, Suzuki and the child await the Lieutenants return in a night-long vigil.
Act III - Dawn, the next day
As day breaks, Suzuki sends Butterfly and her child away to rest. Pinkerton enters, followed by his American wife, Kate, and Sharpless. They have been told of Pinkertons child and Kake wants to raise him as her own. When Suzuki realizes who the American woman is, she collapses in despair, but agrees to help break the news and convince

Butterfly. Pinkerton feels a surge of remorse for Butterfly, bids farewell to his former happiness in the little home, and quickly leaves. Butterfly enters, and upon seeing Kate, realizes the truth. Strangely calm, Butterfly agrees to give them the child, if Pinkerton will return for him in a half-hour. Alone, she kneels before the statue of Buddha, and unsheathes her fathers sword so that she may die with honor. Suzuki pushes the child back into the room, and Butterfly drops the sword to embrace him. She then brings the child to play, blindfolding him so that he will not witness his mothers ritual suicide. As she dies, Pinkerton is heard calling her name.

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City apprentice program offers selected students at the University of Kansas and University of Missouri-Kansas City valuable experiences in training to become a professional opera singer. Participants in both programs have numerous opportunities to gain performance experience through chorus, comprimario and principal roles and with community outreach and activities.

What story about your personal/professional life do you wish reporters would tell when promoting your work for a producing Company, but have not? elizabeth: i would not be here had i not been encouraged by my brother, sister-in-law, and local choir director to audition for vocal performance. i thought i was a big fish in a small pond, and the thought of pursuing this path seemed insane! What is an average day like for you? Do you have a set routine? elizabeth: i wish i had a routine, but with different class schedules, it is nearly impossible! i try to practice two hours a day as well as work out five days a week.
