Syllabus: Digital Studies/Citizenry - Winter 2012 - LLCU-211-001

Mondays & Wednesdays from 10:05-11:25am in Leacock Building 15 Professor Stfan Sinclair office hours after class or by appointment

This course will provide a conceptual and practical understanding of how to leverage technologies in a range of common activities such as searching, social networking, presenting, and creating web content. The emphasis will be on using and understanding digital technologies in effective and ethical ways in our digital society.

students will be familiar with a wide range of tools and techniques for digital studies and citizenry students will have expertise in using a set of tools effectively to enhance the expression of their own ideas students will have experience in communicating their ideas using a variety of digital platforms students will have experience in planning and implementing a collaborative digital project

The schedule for the course will be flexible, allowing us visit topics as they become relevant to the course discussion and work. Typically there will be at least one reading assigned per week, one blog topic per week, and a technical competency to be achieved. sample issues: copyright, privacy, ethics, authority, accessibility, group dynamics, digital literacy, etc. sample technical skills: static and dynamic web authorship, social media applications, visual rhetoric, mobile platforms Please note that further details, including readings, will be provided via the course management system. There are no bookstore purchases to be made for this course.

Blog (30%): Students will write at least one blog entry per week that responds to the blog topic given for that week (it will be assigned at least one week in advance). Blog entries will be assessed for the quality of the ideas and expression it should be apparent that students have made an effort. Late blog entries will not be considered.
