Summary
The city of Valjevo has been known under this name since 1392 A.D., but its site,
favourable both to traffic and to agriculture, must have been settled much earlier.
Recently the foundations of a medieval church have been discovered in the city-quarter of
Gradac, and an inscription bears witness to its existence in the early 14th century. This find
supports the old identification of Gradec, mentioned in a document dating back to 1019

A.D., with Valjevo. Moreover, in the name Gradac, meaning castle", J. Kali sees a Slavic
designation for the ruins of an ancient fortress, whose name has fallen into oblivion. There
is neither historical nor archaeological evidence of a Roman settlement on this spot; it is
only six miles to the south - near to the village of Brangovi, in the Gradac-River
- that the remnants of an early Byzantine fortification have been recognized, right on the
old Roman road leading from the Municipium Maluense (at Poega) to Sirmium
(Sremska Mitrovica). Along its route some toponyms of Latin origin are to be found:
Povlert < Paulinus, Sliban < Silvanus, as well as the Brangovi-fortress seems to have
been named in Latin Columbaria (pidgeon-)niches", after the numerous small caves,
typical of this part of the . This name survives hitherto in the form Kolubara,
designating the main river of Valjevo; it may even be testified in the Pre-Slavic era, though
only partially. The list of Dardanian castles in Procopius' de aedificiis IV 4 ends with
Primoniana, Pamilinos (to be read: Paullinos) and Aria (conjecturally: [Columbjaria).
These toponyms can be identified with Paramun, Taor under the mountain Povlen and
Brangovi = Kolubara, three late antique fortresses situated sucessively in the direction
south-north on the Roman road Maluense - Sirmium.
