Experimental Design: Temperature and Enzymes Problem: How does temperature affect the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction? Research and Observations: Some cells in your body can produce hydrogen peroxide (H202) to help fight infection. H202 is one of many chemicals that can help cells at low levels and harm them at high levels. So the level of H202 in a cell must be controlled H202 can break down into water (H20 )and oxygen gas (02). An enzyme called catalase helps speed up this reaction. In this lab, you will observe this enzyme-catalyzed reaction. Then you will design an experiment to determine the effect of temperature on the reaction. Safety Precautions: Hydrogen peroxide solution can be irritating. If the solution gets in your eye, tell your teacher and she will send you to the nurse. Vocabulary: Chemical reactions Reactants Products Activation Energy Catalyst Enzymes Substrates
