versus Prose Prose is the language in the form in which it is typically written (or spoken) Poetry - the art of rhythmical composition or literary works written in verse.

Prose: The Puritan Sermon Sermon - which is a discourse, usually delivered from a pulpit and based upon a text of scripture, for the purpose of giving religious instruction. Enumerate is to mention a number of things one by one. Structure: Puritan Sermon 1. Biblical overview (based on quotes from the bible) 2. The listed reasons for this particular quote (assertion) 3. Application (responses of the congregation or what the congregation should do)

Listed reasons: a. Always standing in a slippery place b. Liable to fall at any moment (it will be very sudden) c. Only your own weight will bring you down d. You may think that you are standing up, but it is really God 3. Application of this sermon is what you read in HOLT. The response of the congregation.

Poetry: Bradstreet and Edward Taylor Stanza - which is a group of lines of verse (usually not less than four), arranged according to a definite scheme (number of lines, meter, or sequence of rhymes). Lines- words-letterssyllables Syllables - is a unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds. Example: water is composed of two syllables: wa and ter.
