Solution for descriptive statistics:

Dr. Martin is evaluating a new drug to increase hemoglobin levels in anemic patients. He performs an experiment in which he measures hemoglobin levels before and after administration of the drug. The descriptive statistics and a statistical test for an effect of

l t r r t r i i t i

the drug are: a. What type of T test is this? Answer: This is paired sample test or dependent or related sample test. b. What assumptions should Dr. Martin have evaluated? Where any of them met? Answer: The assumptions are:1) The two samples should be of equal size. 2) The samples should be dependent and possibly identify specific pairs. 3) The sample differences should be normal. All the assumptions are met. c. What are the null and the alternate hypotheses (2 tailed) in your own words? Answer: Null Hypothesis (Ho): d = 0, there is no difference between the before and after administration of the drug.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): d 0, there is difference between before and after administration of the drug. d. Interpret the results in terms of the hypotheses in your own words. Does Dr Martin have reason to be optimistic about the new medication? Note: the data is calculated as pre value post value. Answer: Since the p-value is very small, we have sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis. We can conclude that there is difference between before and after administration of the drug. e. What, in your own words, would happen if Dr. Martin made a type 1 error. Answer: When type I error is made, the new drug has increase hemoglobin levels in anemic patients when actually it has not increased.
