MESSAGE
it gives me immense pleasur to see the publication ofthe Stratigraphy of Pakistan by
the Geological Survey of Pakistan. I congratulate GSP and its scientist, parcularly the
author of this publication for having produced such a monumental work of research.
Several areas of Pakistan had significant data about their stratigraphic settings and
natural resources potential. It was quite dificult in the past to have a quick and easy access ‘0
these sources of information, mainly because of absence of any reliable data base. Now with
this comprehensive stratigraphic data and updating of the previous work, the problem has
been sesolved to a great extent. T am particularly glad to know that GSP has a plan to soon
taunch an electronic version of this excellent work on CD's and also make it available on its
web site,
‘A reliable geological data base is pre-requisite to attract investment in the mineral
sector, This document produced by GSP provides a solid foundation for such a data base.
‘This publication is another milestone in implementation of the National Miner Policy
(NMP) that aims to attract and facilitate domestic and foreign investment inthe mineral sector
of Pakistan, The scope of this publication will not only be confined to mineral, gemstones
and coal only but it will also be equally useful to oil and gas companies. In fect, this new
stratigraphic version will convince every investor of tremendous natural resources potential
that Pakistan's fascinating goology offers as new and emerging avenue for exploration and
development.

FOREWORD
Itis a great pleasure for me to know that Geological Survey of Pakistan is publishing
the new volume of ‘Stratigraphy of Pakistan’. The vast colloction of stratigraphic data not
only reflects the details of geological studies carried out in this part of the world but also
provides a scicntific rationale and impetus to more vigorous effort to research and explore
new mineral and hydrocarbon deposits in Pakistan, The new stratigraphic data cited in this
volume will also be helpful in formulating national policies and open several new visas of
furthor research, The aviilability of this publication in both print and electronic form will
provide rescarchers and exploration companies « data base to better plan their future studies
and programs.
It is hoped that this publication will be a prelude to GSP's on-going activities for
setting up an efficient system that should allow easy and economical access to authorized data
catities for a dependable facility of multi-user retrieval. Mineral exploration is a continuous
process and dependent upon a reliable geological data base. Minerals are regarded as
generators of economic growth; therefore, their systematic exploration and development is an
area of high priority for revival of the national economy. The structural organization and
revitalization of the role and activities of the Geological Survey of Pakistan within the
