WITH around a quarter of all diesel sold in Northern Ireland now believed to be from illegal fuel sources, an MP is calling for an urgent response from Customs officials. Speaking during NI Questions
in the Commons yesterday, Ian Paisley described the levels of laundered and smuggled fuel in the Province as staggering and said it was vital that HMRC pursues this issue as a matter of high importance. The MP for North Antrim said: A recent HMRC report on measuring tax gaps has revealed
that smuggled diesel has increased in the last year, moving from 12 per cent of all diesel sold to 25 per cent this year. That is a staggering increase and demands that action is taken. Mr Paisley said there must now be a much greater emphasis on finding new measures to
permanently mark diesel in a way that makes removing the dye impossible and added: Currently the practice of laundering diesel not only robs the Treasury of huge amounts of revenue but also has a very detrimental environmental impact with the criminals engaged in the practice Turn to page 5
