In this work, some HEN alternatives in hydrodealkylation of toluene (HDA) process (e.g. alternative 1, 4, dan 6 from Terrill and Douglas, 1987) are used as a case study, and HYSYS is utilized to carry out the steady state simulation. RGA and CN of HEN alternatives 1, 4, and 6 can be calculated easily, making it quite appropriate for use at the conceptual design of chemical process before dynamic simulation is undertaken. The pairing of controlled/manipulated variables for HEN is determined based on the RGA. Whereas the controllability of HEN is analyzed according to its CN. This study reveals that the higher energy recovery could be achieved, the higher CN will become. Therefore, the tradeoffs between energy integration and controllability could be clearly identified. Key words: Heat Exchanger Network (HEN), Hydrodealkylation of Toluene (HDA), Relative Gain Array (RGA), Condition Number (CN)
