ANALYSIS OF STUDENT LEARNING

Prompt: In this section, you will analyze data to explain progress and achievement toward showcase lesson objective(s) demonstrated by your whole class and then focus on three (3) individual students (low, average, high performers). Whole Class: The following table displays the pre- and post-assessment scores of the students in my
fifth grade clinical class.

The overall scores on the assessments were actually pretty good. I was expecting them to perform the way they did on their pre assessment, because they hadnt discussed the content in about a day or so. The information was new to them when it was introduced, but my pre- assessment should have been a review. The majority of the errors came from remembering the vocabulary; in most cases, they left problems blank. 40.9 percent of the students in the class scored a zero on the pre- assessment. These students did not answer any of the three problems correctly. 40.9 percent of the students scored a one on the preassessment. These students correctly answered one out of the three problems on the assessment. 9.09

percent of the students scored a two on the assessment. These students correctly answered two out of the three questions correctly. No one scored a three on the pre assessment and there were also tow students absent which makes up the other 9.09 percent of the class. The students who received a one or a two answered either number one, number two or both correctly. I was happy with the results of the students post assessment. They were higher for the most part and no one received a score of zero. The review of the material seemed to help the students recall the information. 14.6 percent scored a one on the assessment. These students correctly answered one out of three problems. 63.6 percent scored a two on the assessment. These students correctly answered two out of the three correctly. 13.6 percent scored a three on the post assessment. These students answered all three of the problems correctly. I was very pleased that the percentage of students who scored a zero went from 40.9 percent on the pre assessment to 0 on the post assessment. That means that every student increased their scores on the post assessment. Individuals: I chose three individual students to analyze during this lesson. I chose a high performing student, student #12, an average performing student, student # 2 and a low performing student, student # 3. Student # 12 scored a one on the pre-assessment. This student is an above average student. He is the only student in this classroom who is in GATAS. On his pre- assessment he answered only one question which he answered correctly. On the post- assessment he was one of the three students who scored a three. I was expecting a three for him on both assessments, but in my opinion the whole class needed a review of the content. He not only answered the questions correctly, but was thorough in showing his work on the Standard form question. Student #2 scored a zero on the pre-assessment. This student did not answer any of the three questions correctly. Unlike some of the other students, this student did attempt each question. This student has a reputation that has followed her from previous grades; she misses a lot of school. She was not present for the initial introduction to exponents, so the review in actuality was her introduction. During the lesson this student seemed a bit confused, but as we progressed and had practice, she seemed to grab and understanding of the content. This student is also one of a few who do not know their multiplication facts. On the post assessment this student scored a two. She correctly answered two of the three questions. Being that she does not know her multiplication facts, the question she missed was the standard form question. When the students are asked to put 5x5x5x5x5 in standard form, they have to solve the equation. The student did attempt to solve but she had incorrect multiplication throughout the problem. Student #3 scored a zero on the pre- assessment. This student did not attempt any of the problems, instead they only wrote down the questions. This student is one that goes out in the afternoon and works with another teacher to improve their math scores on the MAP test. This student is easily distracted and can sometimes be a distraction to other students. During the lesson she was surprisingly attentive and even participated when I asked students to share their answers. One the post- assessment this student scored a three. I was very pleased with this one, because she can do the work, but sometimes she just doesnt. Her math grades fluctuate, but multiplication is not one of her weakness. She also was able to thoroughly show her work during the standard form question. Copies of both assessments with answers are attached as well as graphs for the whole class pre and post assessment results.
