Mask Task Sheet Ms.

Holloway (2012)
Objectives: To combine the principles of Art, Language Arts and Science by constructing a magic mask that will illustrate biological classification. You will be assessed on the mask in art as well as science, on the journal in science as well as language arts. 3 ASSESSMENTS=1 ASSIGNMENT Problem: You were on a cruise through the Greek islands when suddenly a strange fog engulfs the ship and a pulse knocks you overboard without a cell phone or any electronics! You wake up on the shore of an island that seems uninhabited. While foraging for supplies, you find an intricately carved treasure

chest.

Inside is a map

of the island showing the location of the GREAT

WOLF KING WIZARD and a mask. After reading the parchment inside, you realize, the mask is magic-it turns the wearer into specific organisms-but only once and only for a maximum of 48 hours and only on the island. You also learn that the Wolf King Wizard has little regard for humans! You will need to convince the king that you truly understand the world from the perspective of the organisms that live there! If you can reach the WOLF KING WIZARD in his cave on the other side of the island within 10 days and give him advice from the viewpoint of 5 different organisms, he can and will send you home! But if you dont succeed then

After 10 daysYOU ARE MAROONED FOREVER! Copies of the island map are posted in the classroom and on Moodle

Task
Create a mask that illustrates biological classification Choose mask organisms that possess adaptations that would enable it to survive in the habitat described on the island. For example: A camel would fit the desert. (so you cant use camel now!)

For each organism you include the biological classification (Kingdom, Phylum,Class,Order,Family, Genus, Species) A written report: This can be a creative story or a journal (see Mr. Carrillo for directions) This journal must describe your experience as this organism, the special adaptation(s) that enables you to survive in the habitat. include your Advice From A line. The following terms are used correctly in the journal/story: Vertebrate Heterotroph Decomposer Predator Herbivore Taxonomy Prey Carnivore Adaptations

Invertebrate Autotroph Omnivore Niche

You will be working in both Art and Science class on this topic. You are free to work in the science lab during break and lunch as well (Not A days-duty downstairs) Your mask must illustrate 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. At least one invertebrate animal At least one vertebrate animal At least one plant/fungus/Archaebacteria/ Eubacteria/Protist At least 5 different species Must be real animals that either lived in the past or present

Your written report must 1. Be typed in 12 font Courier or New Roman or handwritten (as per Mr. Carrillos instructions) 2. Can be a factual account with support demonstrating the adaptations organism possess to help you cross the island or it can be a story/myth/poem/journal that you create that explains the adaptations the organism possesses that enables you to cross the island. 3. Organisms chosen meet the time requirements to cross the island. 4. Organisms are used only once to cross the island. 5. Contain the information that is listed on the Mask Organism Information Sheet 6. Has a clearly stated Advice from a . that matches the habitat/niche of the organism. 7. Have a bibliography with references cited in the correct format. (Just like in English class)
