She concluded her remarks by relating her excitement about Thursday's Encaenia ceremonies. Nicholas Hatt asked about the status of negotiations regarding the contract for food services. The President said the negotiations were private and they were ongoing. Kelly Toughill asked about the prospect of negotiating more University control of summer accommodation for use related to academic programs. Nicholas Hatt said he knows many people would like to have input in the contract. The President said the contract would normally roll over with some new terms. She said if people have specific requests the University can have a conversation about those needs. Fred Vallance-Jones asked why the University doesn't open up that contract to tendering, as a normal procedure. He said the best deals are gained frequently through open competition. The President said she has been told that historical University practice has been to stick with long-standing service providers. She added that many people have worked for years at King's. with these companies and a change in providers could throw them out ofworki Neil Robertson said there was a shake-up in University contracts a few years ago and one recommendation was to take the opportunity to hire in-house where possible. President Leavitt said the provision of food services carries huge liability and would require costly insurance.
