ISO 14001 IMPLEMENTATION AT MT. BAKER PRODUCTS 1.WHAT EXTERNAL PRESSURES LED MT. BAKER PLYWOOD TO SEEK ISO 14001 REGISTRATION? HOW AERE THESE PRESSURES LIKELY TO DIFFER BY INDUSTRY AND REGION. a.The area surrounding the old mill had be gentrified with upscale development and the property owers did not want to renew MPS'S expiring lease. A clean environmental bill of health would help the lease holders decide towards renewing the company's lease. ISO 14001 was the newly released standard for a company's EMS. Being certified by a third-party registrar as compliant would ensure the customer the MBP was environmentally responsible. b.Each industry has its own set of standards different from others. The region that it is in also is an impact. (Clean and Green vs Industry Centers). 2.HOW DOES THE SMARTWOOD OR FSC CERTIFICATNION DIFFER FROM ISO 14001 CERTIFICATIONS? a.SmartWood assures customers the chain-of-custody standards for forestry certification programs worldwide are followed. The importance of FSC certification to wood processors, assures product suppliers were managed in an environmentally friendly manner. b.ISO 14001 are the international standards for evaluating a company's environmental management systems(EMS'S) by third party registrars, assuring the customer that MBP's suppliers are environmentally responsible. 3.WHAT ROLE DO ASPECTS AND IMPACTS HAVE IN ISO 14001 What did Josh discover about the right and wrong way to identify environment aspects. a.You must identify the aspects that need to be evaluated for significant impact on the environment. Impacts are the outcome of the aspects. Example. Trucks use fuel, and this add carbon dioxide to the environment. MBP but define an environment management program to correct this issues. This must be done within a time frame to archive targets that are specified. b. The right way to identify environment aspects was to develop lists of potential environmental impacts that could effect each environment aspect. The wrong ways was to use a standard form and job descriptions as the control for the EMP's. 5.WHAT WAS Josh['S MAJOR ERROR IN THE IMPLEMENTATIN PROCESS? a.Josh was unfamiliar with the mill operations, and he needed detailed knowledge for the design programs. Josh used job descriptions to identify the operational control. b. To insure the environmental instructions contained would be followed, the Iit decided to append training sessions to the monthly safety meetings held by each department to provide guidance for the workers and operational control for the EMP'S. 6.WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS ISO CERTIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY TODAY IN CREATING AND MAINTAING GLOBAL MARKET SHARE? JUSTIFY YOU ANSWERS.

BAKER PRODUCTS. 6a.There is only 1 ISO certification available today. 6b.ISO 14001 is very important in todays markets, customers want to know that there product adheres to a strict documented production system. If you are not ISO 14001 certified you can not show that you comply with the standards of the industry, making other with certification a better fit because of there commitment to standards.
