CHAPTER 1 ACCIDENT PREVENTION

1.0 ACCIDENT PREVENTION

1.1 Understand the importance of safety procedures and applications in machining, welding, fitting and foundry work in the engineering workshop. 1.1.1 State the general accident prevention procedures in relation to personal safety, colleague, machine and equipments. 1.1.2 Explain the importance of wearing goggles, grinding wheel guards and maintaining workshop safety and cleanliness. 1.1.3 Explain the environmental issues regarding accident, legislation, protocol, laws and regulations in engineering workshop.

The general accident prevention procedures

There are 4 main factor that can be implement due to prevent the accidence in workshop :
Personal safety Machine Equipments

Colleague

1.1 Personal Safety

Most of accidents are happen due to careless and lack of responsible to obey the safety aspect. The factor of accident can be avoid by these methods:i. The student should wear safety coat or garments which suitable with their working area and the practical activity. Safety coat that used in arc welding workshop are not the same with the coat that been used during lathe machine workshop. Students hair should be keep neat and short. Long hair can cause severe injured because it may stuck in spinning machine or any hazard equipment. Do not playing around in workshop area especially near the working machine. Do not wear any jewelries such as watch, ring bracelet because all this accessories may attached to machine and lead to injuries.

iii.

1.2 Colleague
Students are encourage to have good spirit and working ethics during practical activity in workshop due to prevent accident. The students working ethics are:
i. ii. iii. iv. Taking care the cleanliness and neatness of clothes and appearance Have responsibility to their own self. Have good tolerant and consideration toward other colleague s goods. Have full concentration and calmness during practical work.

1.3 Safety During Using A Machine

The safety procedure during using a machine will be covered in coming units. Generally, all accident related to machine can be prevent by:
i) All machine should have good earth wiring due to avoid any electrical hazard. ii) Avoid directly touch or holding sharp tools such as grinding tooth, tip of scriber.

1.4 Organize Equipment

The tidiness and cleanliness of working area are important to prevent accident and also may increase the efficiency of working. Therefore, these are several rules that should be obey :i) Do not let the tools messed on the workshop floor. ii) Keep the floor free from any oil or griss. If there were any oil spilled on the floor, it shold be sweep or mop off due to avoid slippery. iii) Do not let any chip or excessive metal messed on the workshop floor and around machine. iv) The workshop area should have good air circulation, have safety line working area sign and walking area. v) Workshop should have walking bay and emergency door. vi) Fire preventive equipment should be place at appropriate area, easily seen and grab if needed.

ACTIVITY 1A

1. Explain the importance to have serious safety awareness during working in workshop? 2. What does it mean with personal safety and equipment safety? 3. What is the first procedure that should you take once you come into workshop?

The importance of using safety equipment and maintaining workshop cleanliness.

The used of personal protective equipment and maintaining the cleanliness of workshop are very important due to avoid any hazard. The examples of PPE:
Body part Eye Protection Safety glasses, goggles

Face
Head Feet Hands and arms Bodies Hearing

Face shields
Hard hats Safety shoes Gloves Vests Earplugs, earmuffs

SAFETY RULES IN WORKSHOP

1. Always listen carefully to the instructor and follow instructions. 2. Do not run in the workshop, you could bump into another student and cause an accident. 3. Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned in the workshop. If you see an accident at the other side of the workshop you can use the emergency stop button to turn off all electrical power to machines. 4. Always wear an apron as it will protect your clothes and hold lose clothing such as ties in place. 5. Wear good strong shoes. training shoes are not suitable. 6. Bags should not be brought into a workshop as people can trip over them. 7. When learning how to use a machine, listen very carefully to all the instructions given by the instructor. Ask questions, especially if you do not fully understand. 8. Do not use a machine if you have not been shown how to operate it safely by the instructor. 9. Always be patient, never rush in the workshop. 10. Always use a guard when working on a machine. 11. Keep hands away from moving/rotating machinery. 12. Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind the cutting edge. 13. Report any damage to machines/equipment as this could cause an accident.

CHAPTER 2 HAND TOOL

HAND TOOLS
Layout and measuring tools may be measurement transfer tools or have scales for determining distances.
Transfer tools are used to transfer a measurement from one point to another. May not know or care what the dimension is
Dividers

Calipers
Centre punch

Measuring tools have a scale that can be used to determine a dimension, distance, or angle.
Surface gauge
Squares Straight edge

HACKSAW
A hacksaw is used to cut metals, such as steel, aluminum, brass, or copper. The cutting blade of a hacksaw is replaceable and the sharpness and number of teeth can be varied to meet the needs of the job.
