Individualism Dominant feature of Western culture that stresses the rights, freedom, and importance of individuals over groups 4. Acculturation Adoption of the dominant groups cultural patterns by a new or oppressed group 5. Assimilation Process by which groups adopt or change the dominant culture Short Answer: 1. What impact does culture have on the way one lives? In my opinion, culture and lifestyle are two big factors affecting behavior, manners and performance of this generation. One only has to look at the programs and news of todays viewing to understand. We are being manipulated not only by ethnicity and racial diversity, but by what the TV media desires that we should have or understand. Conspiracy theorists do not help either. Every time someone that is not a WASP becomes public or makes an impact on society, they are immediately seen as a fluke the one that slipped under the radar. 2. Why is the understanding of culture important to those entering the teaching profession? Because the word culture has changed from that of say 20 or 30 years ago. Today culture encompasses more than just the race, or color of your skin; we are also faced with male or female, gay or straight, handicapped or just an idiot, etc. The new teacher has to deal not only with the sex, color, or upbringing of the student; but also, why and how did this child become to be, and why is his or her interpretation of what you just asked different from another.
