RADIONUCLIDE RENOGRAPHY

Bachelors in Medical Imaging Technology

Introduction
Kidneys are responsible for 3 major functions;
Regulatory Maintenance of acid-base balance, pH, blood volume, electrolytes Endocrine Secretion and activation of hormones Excretory Glomerular filtration, active tubular filtration and reabsorption.

Radiopharmaceuticals
Can be classified in 3:a) Those excreted by Glomerular filtration
a) Tc99m DTPA b) Cr51 EDTA c) Tc99m MDP

b) Those excreted by tubular secretion

a) I123 and I131 OIH b) Tc99m MAG3 c) Tc99m L,L and D,D EC

c) Those retained in renal tubules for long

a) Tc99m DMSA b) Tc99m GH (both retention & GFR)
CLINICAL NUCLEAR MEDICINE Hans Jurgen, Leonard M. Pg.172

Cont.
The radiopharmaceuticals eliminated by the kidneys help to evaluate renal function and urinary drainage. Those retained by the renal parenchyma are termed as cortical agents and help to assess renal mass distribution.
