RAIN WATER HARVERSTING

SOLUTION TO WATER CRISIS This is time of rainy season, where city areas people like in Kathmandu, has opportunity to collect and store water for dry days. For this, one of the easy ways is to use rain water harvesting technique which can be a solution to water crisis. It is appropriate in areas with an average rainfall greater than 200mm (7.9 inch) per year and no other accessible water sources. It includes different methods like Ground catchment system, Roof catchment system and Subsurface dyke. 1. Ground catchment system: This method includes water from prepared catchment area into storage. It is especially important in those places where rainwater is very scarce and other source is not available and it is suitable for small community.

2. Roof catchment system:

In this rainwater harvesting system the water channel falls onto storage via a system of gutters and pipes. For this following thing to be noted, First flush of rain should be allowed to run and Storage tank should be covered to prevent mosquitoes breeding, reduction in evaporation loss contamination & algal growth.

3. Subsurface dyke:

It is built in an aquifer to obstruct the natural flow of ground water, raising the ground water level & increasing the amount of water stored in aquifer.

At last let us think, Annual rainfall at Kathmandu generally exceeds 1300 mm. We can save valuable drinking water and we can reduce the amount of energy and chemical needed to treat and transport water.
