Though, theoretically glass molding process is best suited for fabricating glass lenses in bulk, it has some inherent

challenges associated with it like deviation in lens profile, residual stresses and mold life etc., which are preventing its industrial application on large scale. Because of heating and cooling cycles and resulting thermal stresses the profile of lens obtained at the end of molding is different from the desired lens profile. Deviation in the lens profile and residual stresses trapped in the lens together affects refractive index of glass. Owing to continuous use, mold surfaces wear out and loose its surface finish. Their surfaces need to be finished or completely replaced periodically. So another challenge is to increase the life of molds which are very expensive.
