INTRODUCTION:
A chopper can be considered as a switch used to obtain a variable D. C. voltage from a source Of constant D. C. voltage. With the advancement in semiconductor technology, thyi-i_stors used as active devices have been replaced the static switches and the thyristorised chopper circuits have gained importance for industrial application, choppers are also termed as D. C. to D. C. Controllers or Time Ratio Controllers. T.R.C.'s are used to obtain, from a fixed d. c. input voitlAge, a variable d. c_ volt.Age.

The Jones chopper circuit is based on class [D] coninflOn method. The auxiliary thylistor is used to switch a charged capacitor across the conducting thyaistor. With this additional thyristoi t [ON] and. t [OFF] can be independantly controlled. Refer to circuit diagram [Fig: --/.1 Th.e thristor TH2 may be triggered first to charge the commutating capacitor C the polarity marked in the figure. When THI is' triggered, the charged capacitor C discharges around the path C, Tin, Li, Di and gets clamed in the opposite direction. The diode DI prevents the opposite current flow in the series circuit. When TH2 is triggered, reverse charged capacitor will be connected across the thy-rigor TH1 and turn it off If TH1 is triggered before the capacitor C is charpd, then the load current in L2 will induce suffic oltage of proper [i.e. opposite] polarity, to charge C negatively. So it becomes Munatcrial which thyTis-tor triggered first.
