CIMT 512 Literature for Young People

The Calendar is subject to revision as class progresses, and I will keep you posted if changes are needed. It lays out the entire course and tells you when all assignments are due. You are responsible for meeting all deadlines posted here.

Week 0: Monday 4 July Sunday 10 July


Before the 1st day of class (Monday 11 July) you should have: Secured copies of the course texts Explored thoroughly our electronic classroom Braced yourself for a fast-paced, and reading intensive, summer term Started poking around in the texts, reading ahead if possible, and even working on the Introductory Assignment, if you wish

Week 1: Monday 11 July Sunday 17 July


By Midnight EDT time on Sunday 17 July you should have: Read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (Knowing Childrens Literature, Understanding Childrens Responses to Literature, Changing

World of Childrens Books & The Development of Multicultural Literature, Books to Begin On, Picture Books, and Traditional Literature) in the Kiefer text

Reviewed thoroughly all materials dealing with the Proficiency Project and Book Review assignments Submitted the Introductory Assignment

Week 2: Monday 18 July Sunday 24 July


By Midnight EDT time on Sunday 24 July you should have: Read Chapters 7,8, 9, 10, 11, 12, & 13 (Modern Fantasy, Poetry, Contemporary Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Nonfiction Books, Biography, & Planning the Literature Program) in Kiefer

By Midnight EDT time on Sunday 31 July you should have: Read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 (Young Adults and Their Reading; A Brief History of Adolescent Literature; Pop Culture, YA Lit, Big Business, and Archetypal Images; Contemporary Realistic Fiction; Poetry, Drama, and Humor; & Adventure, Sports Mysteries, and the Supernatural) in Donelson Submitted your assigned Proficiency Project

Week 4: Monday 1 August Sunday 7 August


By Midnight EDT time on Sunday 7 August you should have: Read Chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12 (Fantasy, Science Fiction, Utopias, and Dystopias; History and History Makers;

Nonfiction; Evaluating, Promoting and Using Young Adult Books; Literature in the English Class; & Censorship) in

Donelson Submitted the Book Review assignment Reviewed thoroughly the posted sample Proficiency Projects

Week 5: Monday 8 August Sunday 14 August Exam Week


Last day of class Thursday 11 August

Final grades are to be reported to the Registrar by 4:00PM on Tuesday 17 August. To see your final course grade access your MyISU account several days after 16 August.
