Whats New
With only three weeks of school, December is ALWAYS a busy month. Every Friday this month we have something exciting planned. From Watch DOGS to our 1st Annual Fine Arts Fair, Strattonville is the place to be! Did you know that the managers of every venture and agency recently took a field trip to CUSFs, The I.D.E.A. Store? Not only were they amazed by all of the cool stuff the IDEA store had, but they also learned about sustainability. They learned how reusing, reducing, and recycling are not only good for the environment, but also great for business. Managers were also challenged to think critically and creatively to identify ways their ventures or agencies could begin to use recycled goods for their products and services.

What s New C ontinued:

Did you know Strattonville raised over $1,300 to donate to the Pennies for Patients school and youth program? The money donated will go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The winning class, Ms. Shins 3rd grade class, brought in over $300! Other big news going around Strattonville is taxes are due! This week during Market Time, students are visiting the Strattonville Treasury and paying their taxes for the months of October & November. MicroSocietys slogan is bringing real life to learning; having students pay income taxes is a perfect example of this. We want students to begin to understand that in life, there are going to be things that have to be budgeted for, in this case, taxes. I was talking to a parent and she said her daughter had come home and asked her, mom, do YOU have to pay taxes? and why do you have to pay taxes? These are the kinds of questions and conversations we want our students to be asking and having.

Venture Updates:
Mi cro S TEM Unive rsi ty:
This month we are making gold using nanotechnology for our market days. Our students have had two days of training with a Nano scientist from the University of Illinois who taught us so many things about future careers in engineering. He conducted experiments with us that showed us how particles that are so small you cannot see them act in ways so different from larger particles. Metals that shrink when heated and expand when cooled. We learned about new products that use nanotechnology like pants that shed water and cars that change color. We learned that doctors could monitor patients vital signs with a Nano patch attached to their skin. This has great applications for countries that cannot afford enough hospitals. The last week of December we are going to work with a remotecontrolled drone that we will program to fly around the gym and take video footage. We might even use this to spy on other ventures!!!!

Dep artment of E con omic Growth:

The Department of Economic Growth and Quality Control Inspectors will be making weekly visits to each venture during the month of December. The agency has created rubrics to score the quality of products and the safety of production. Inspectors will also be checking that all employees are wearing school uniforms while working and shopping in the Marketplace. Business rent of $200 will be collected during the first week of December; DEG employees will be tracking and recording rent payments made by businesses.

~Ask Me About~ In MicroSociety Ask me about my job and role in my venture. Ask me about the Market Dayshow am I planning to spend my earnings? Ask me how much I have to pay in taxes. The Leader in Me Habit #3 Put 1st things 1st- Ask me what it means, what is the hand signal for it, and how it will make me a better leader Ask me about the first two habits we learned: Habit #1: Be Proactive Habit #2: Begin With the End in Mind

The Strattonville Treasury is collecting income taxes for the months of October & November. After this, every month, Students will pay a predetermined amount according to their venture salary. These taxes will help pay our Peace Officers, treasury employees, and our Dept. of Economic growth employees.
