REACTION PAPER

(QC councilors are squatter coddlers)

I have read the article- QC councilors are squatter coddlers- authored by Neal
Cruz in Philippine Daily Inquirer. In brief, the article features points concerning taxpayer,
squatters, and politicians. It criticizes politicians specifically in QC of the ordinance they
have made regarding the squatters. They proposed an ordinance declaring a
moratorium on the eviction of squatters in the city. However, these councilors and
congressmen proposed the ordinance only for the votes of the numerous squatters in
the city.

My reaction to what I have just read is that, as a student, I couldn’t relate yet to
the issue between the politicians, the taxpayers, and the squatters for the reason that I
am not a taxpayer myself yet. But that does not hinder my understanding of the
situation. In fact, I am very much aware of the unworthy politicians who are in power.
Sad to say, but it seems that it is as if a trend in the Philippines. Most of our leaders are
not really concerned in the development and welfare of the people, but they are very
much eager to remain in power and pursue their personal interests.

In my opinion, I do agree that it is definitely true that the ordinance as if attracts

more squatters all over the country to crowd in QC because the area can’t be
demolished unless there are relocation sites for the families affected. At first hear, it is
as if a very good ordinance protecting the people living in the slums. Yet, as good as
one might look at it, it has flaws and hidden agendas of the proponents behind it.

Consequently, the rightful taxpayers are forgotten. These people are actually
responsible for making the city the richest in the whole country. And also thanks to
them-for the taxes they have paid-these greedy politicians have funds to finance for
their nonsense advertisements merely to keep reminding people of their names. I have
the similar opinion with the author that it seems unfair for the taxpayers. They didn’t get
anything back from the taxes they rightfully pay. Instead, it can be observed that the
money of the people was spent for many gibberish actions.

To finish, I do agree that what’s behind the action of the politicians who proposed
the ordinance is something unfair for the many. The votes-squatters are plenty of these-
are what these greedy politicians are after for. They indeed proposed the ordinance only
to win the votes of the numerous squatters in the city. Logically, they only make that to
promote their personal interests and to continuously cling to power.
