The Solar System

Mercury
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Mercury is planet #1 in our solar system. Mercury has 0 moons. Mercury is 57,910,000 kilometers from the sun. The surface has dusty soil. Mercury's thin atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. It also has smaller amounts of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The layers of Mercury are similar to Earths, with a crust and a rocky mantle and iron core.

6.

Venus
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Venus is planet # 2 in the solar system. Venus is 108,000,000 kilometers from the sun. Venus is covered with thick poisonous acid clouds. The sun cant get through so it is always dark. Venus has carbon dioxide, which is also part of the poison clouds. Venus has a dry rocky surface with deep cracks and small vocanoes. In the atmosphere there is sulphuric acid droplets that is deadly to any living creature who breathed it in. Venus has no magnetic field, it is a sphere of rocks, dust and waterless expanse of mountains and plains. There is also 200 mile wide river of hardened lava.

The Moon

Earth [you are here]

1. 2. 3. 4. Earth is planet # 3 in the solar system. Earth is 149,668,992 kilometers from the sun. Earth only has one moon. Part of Earths atmosphere has a gas, called oxygen. We use it to breathe. 5. Nitrogen is the major gas in the atmosphere. 6. Earth itself has 4 layerscrust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.

Mars
1. 2. 3. 4. Mars is planet # 4 in the solar system. Mars is 220,480,128 kilometers away from the sun. Mars has 2 moons called Phobos and Deimos. Mars has the biggest volcano is our solar system, called Olympus Mons. All of Mars volcanoes are extinct. 5. Mars is called the red planet because of its red rocks and iron dust. 6. Mars has a core that is mainly iron and sulfur, with mantle of silicate, the crust is made of basalt and the iron oxide to give it a reddish/orange color.

Jupiter
1. Jupiter is planet # 5 in the solar system. 2. Jupiter is 751,563,648 kilometers from the sun. 3. From Jupiters outer layer to center there is 625 miles of clouds and gas. 4. Jupiter is made up of helium and hydrogen. There is also methane and ammonia. The center/core is made of helium. 5. The red spot on Jupiter is a hurricane that has lasted for 100s of years. It can fit 3 or more Earths inside the spot.

Saturn
1. 2. 3. 4. Saturn is planet # 6 in the solar system. Satun is 1,392,082,560 kilometers from the sun. Saturn has 18 moons. Saturn is made up of gas and liquids like Jupiter the materials are less dense than water, so Saturn could float on water. The rings around Saturn are made of ice, pebbles and dust. Like Jupiter, Saturn is made of mostly hydrogen and a little helium. There is also sulfur.

5. 6.

Uranus
1. Uranus is planet # 7 in the solar system. 2. 2,772,899,712 kilometers from the sun. 3. Has 27 moons in all that we know of. 4. Uranus has rings of its own and they are thought to be made of ice and rock. 5. Uranus is made of methane gas, that gives it a green/blue color. 6. Uranus is made of methane and ammonia. The atmosphere has methane clouds, and a little bit of hydrogen and helium.

Neptune
1. 2. 3. 4. Neptune is planet # 8 in the solar system. 4,342,010,112 kilometers from the sun. Neptune currently has 13 moons. Neptune is like all other gas giants, especially Uranus, it is dark and cold. It has methane in the atmosphere and methane layers. The fast winds of Neptunes surface are 10 times as fast as our fastest hurricanes that over 1550 miles per hour!

Questions:

Why is Pluto a Dwarf planet?

PLANET: [noun] Definition: A celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. Pluto doesnt go in an elliptical orbit. Its orbit is a funky shape that goes way out and then comes closer to Neptunes orbit. So sometimes Pluto is planet #8 in the solar system.

Why is Earth suitable for life? Earth has:

1] TEMPERATURE:
a. average temperature is 55 degrees

2] WATER:

a. where there is water there is life!!

3] MAGNETIC FIELD:
a. protects us from extreme radiation.

4] GRAVITY: a. keeps us on the planet. 5] OXYGEN: a. allows us to breathe. .
