Tuesday April 3, 2012 Grade 9/10 Concert Band Objectives As a result of this lesson students will play the

melody, harmony, and bass line of the theme material in With Quiet Courage, and be able to play all parts both as directed (could be flutes playing the bass parts) and as written in their music (at bars 1-7, 17-24, 33-40). Accommodations Students may either grasp the material quickly or slowly; be prepared to work on more intricate aspects of the music if they develop quickly, and be patient and demonstrate much more if they are struggling. Introduction 0:00-2:00 Stretches (tense up & let go, sway with floppy/no I didnt do it!/Ok! I did it! arms) 2:00-5:00 Breathing exercises (in through nose/mouth/O, biggest breath plus another, in on whole/half/quarter/eighth) 5:00-9:00 Warm-up on concert Db; play 2 beats & rest for 5 on each note. Make sure youre thinking about your next note in the break! Sequence 9:00-10:00 Demonstrate Melody #1 10:00-13:00 Have students say rhythm of melody #1, sing it and airband, then play 13:00-15:00 Students will listen to harmony #1, then play it back 15:00-18:00 Divide group into 2; have one group play the melody and have the other play the harmony 18:00-20:00 Students will play the bass line, making sure all pitches are correct 20:00-23:00 Divide group into 3; one group will play each part (give sections parts they would not normally play such as the low brass on melody or clarinets and flutes on the bass line) 23:00-30:00 Have students play measures 1-7, 17-24, and 33-40; ask whether they know that section already after every run. Students will begin to see the similarities within the music Assessment Watch students for confused faces, proper posture, good use of breath, and listen for pitch discrepancies due to key signature difficulties.
