Is open field flower cultivation an attractive business?

During the 1990s, big capital intensive floriculture projects took off in India. Some of them like Karuturi have been a big global success. Many others faced enormous financial difficulties and struggled to repay their bank loans. But what about less capital intensive open field flower cultivation? Is there a future for cultivating flowers without repeating the mistakes of the 1990s?

Q &A
My question is that Can I
start a dairy farm????? I have chosen this because of heavy power failure in Erode, I cant start any other business. Most important I am interested in dairy farm. Still I have some doubts..
Kabilan from Tamil Nadu asks-

DAIRY FARM NEED INFO FROM ALL

1. Can I start with 3 cows initially? And can I get a loan for this and for following things? 2. Going with Indian breed or some like Swiss, HF, Jersey. 3.If Indian then what? And if Swiss or HF or Jersey? 4.Hf has less immunity-think so, then Jersy will be better than that ,but in Haryana they have been discontinued this breed for what reason? 5. Have 7 acres of less water facility and 2 acres of medium water facility. What fodder will be best in this condition to grow? 6. Is the following fodder is possible to grow in drip irrigation-napier, guinea grass, soundal tree and drum stick, melia dubai tree, kudirai masala, fodder maize, throughout the year? 7. Because of labour shortage l manage to look after by myself but dont know miking, So can I go for milking machine? 8. What will be the water requirement for 3 cows initially and max upto 15 cows in future?

Many people are saying that it is difficult to survive in this field and make me little nervous and afraid of during this...is it true and for what reason they say this? And finally what will be my investment for this and what will be my profit annually for the same 3 cattle? Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!
Responses received[a] Satya writes Nice to know that you would like start Diary farm business. I feel that you have chosen correct one. I am also planning to set up dairy farm in my paddy field near Rajamundry, Andhrapradesh. I feel that there would be no loss in this business and also, the investment would be less compared to other business. Regarding cattle, I suggest to have only pure Indian breed buffaloes and cows as they have high resistance power to various diseases when compared HF and other cross breeds. Further, it is possible to earn good profits on this business, if we can do it with care. Also, the milk is consumable product which is widely used in our daily lives. I wish you good luck! [b] Guru writes Hi Satya, I am also interested in Starting up a dairy Farm. I want to visit your farm. Please let me know the details. [c] Jaimin Patel writes Hi Kabilan, For Green Fodder you Can go for Lucerne Seed. [d] Sri writes 1. You can start with 3 cows to get experince. There will be minimum profit. 2. With India breed only you can make a social work not business. 3. HF is known for yield. Jersey is known for quality of milk. 4. Mixture of HF and Jersey is good option (few animals Jersey and few HF). 5. 1 acre =5 to 8 animals. 6. Fodder - Napier Sprinkler or Raingun is good. 7. It is not that difficult to milk animals using machine. You can use pressure gun to clean cow barn. 8. If you have slightest doubt on water source dont select that land. Many people have quit dairying because their bore wells dried out. Join this discussion at - http://bit.ly/WNBYYQ

SEEKING HELP FROM LEMONGRASS EXPERTS

Hello, I would like to know from experienced

lemongrass cultivators some practical data on
Vatika_Herbs asks 1. Oil yield in kG per 1 ton herbage of distillation tank 2. No. of 1 ton tanks per acre from 2nd harvest. Recently I started cultivation lemongrass and yield varies 2.5 kg3kg oil per ton of herbage and 4-5 1 ton tank per acre which seems low to me...I shall be very thankful if experts please comment and recommend some practical tips on increasing productivity. Responses received [a] Srsasmal writes - Dear All, Please let me know the minimum area do I require to grow lemongrass for commercial production. And also please let me know how much one needs to invest per acre for the expected result. [b] Ponsanthan writes - Minimum 5-10 acre is required to grow. Distillation unit should be established which needs 3-4 lakh investment for a vessel, chilling tank etc. If any nearby distillation unit able to do job work, it can be used for some time. [c] Aromedindia writes - Lemongrass (variety Krishna) has around 0.8%-0.9% of oil. And the herb yield is around 250 quintal per hectare per annum, producing around 200-250Kg of oil per hectare per annum. Obviously your oil yield is low which can be because of some technical problem in your distillation tank or any other reason. [d] Murjani writes - Hi Ponsanthan, Do you know the company that manufactures the equipment for lemongrass distillation? And also if you know what kind of income can be generated say from 510 acres of lemongrass cultivation? Post your opinions/thoughts at - http://bit.ly/WNEHl2

In Brief
AP-TEC 2012
After the triumphant finish of the first AP-TEC Conference and Exhibition last March 2 and 3, a second AP-TEC Conference has now been scheduled to take place from December 6 to 8, 2012, at Lam Farm, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Hosted by the APTDC and CII with the help of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University and the Andhra Pradesh Government, the conference will provide people of various farming industries to come together to share their growing knowledge in modern agriculture technology. The conference and exhibition organizers hope that this time around, the people gathered will be able to pinpoint and counter that with the bags in the refrigerator, the Jasmine buds remained closed and crisp to the touch for nearly 36 hours and could compete with newly plucked Jasmine buds. The bags help to lower temperature, carbon dioxide, oxygen and ethylene during storage, thus keeping the flowers fresh. Similar experiments have also been conducted on other fresh produce with encouraging results. With hype building around this success, Thermchem is eager to share the technology with farmers through government help. Toshniwal introduces New Generation Mixer

Today, agricultural market and technological demands are changes aggressively hence need for new equipment with upgraded specifications and presentation has increased substantially. To meet the new age demands of the pesticide and bio-fertilizer industry, Toshniwal is now offering new generation mixing technology to help speed up manufacturing rates while keeping costs down. Using a series of paddles jointed onto two shafts in a double-drum housing, the Toshniwal fluidized zone mixer has built in shaft systems that mix in opposite directions. Peripheral speed in conjunction with the angled and overlapping paddles easily fluidizes the materials through a lifting process, which creates a virtually weightless condition in the double drums. A special pin mill system has also been installed into the mixer. The Toshniwal Mixer, a tried and tested product, is suitable for all kinds of bio-fertilizer

problems in quality food delivery. At the same time, they hope to pave the way to growth and prosperity for this booming industry. For a successful conference, the organizers are keeping the doors open to various companies and organizations that cater and offer services to various farming and agricultural sectors. Kumaraswamy Chemicals
Also known in the chemical production industry as KS Chemicals, M/S. Kumaraswamy Chemicals produces chemicals such as surface coatings, heavy automobile break linings and liquid resin binder. Established by Tka. Karthik in 2000, the company was originally located in Kadampuliur in Panruti Taulk, Tamilnadu, before relocating to L. N. Puram. Mr. Tka. Karthik graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry prior to the founding of the company. Products : Whats interesting about the companys product lineup is that they are all made from the same raw material, Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). Using CNSL, the company produces various chemicals and other products such as resins, friction dust, and Cardinol. They also produce powders like exfoliated vermiculite, peralite and mica. Thanks to their high product quality and range, KS Chemicals successfully supplies to all over India, from Delhi to Madurai. Challenges and Target Customers : After twelve years in the industry, Tka. Karthik shares that the only challenge the company now has to deal with is the credit of some of their buyers. Production continues to run smoothly, although Tka. Karthik does hope to have a fully automated production process soon. Break lining, bio fertilizer, pain, lamination and building industries are the main clients and target market of the company. Exports and Competition : Although the company has delved into the exportation of their products, KS Chemicals only processes orders occasionally to clients in Malaysia and Turkey. When asked about the difference of business dealings nationally and internationally, Tka. cessing industry, Mr. Wilkins says, The paddy processing industry is witnessing a trend towards the consolidation of milling capacities, to improve cost efficiency. Further speaking about the challenges faced by the rice processing industry, he says, Half of the worlds population depends on rice as their staple food. The population growth is concentrated in rice producing countries. In the last 50 years, the area of land harvested has grown by 33% while population has grown by 130% in the same period. Global rice production is dominated by China and India and these two countries have managed only 8% increase in output in the last 6 years. Adding, he says, There is a demand for higher quality by the rising middle classes. Also in developing countries supermarkets are increasingly opting for packing of rice in transparent bags. These factors are raising the benchmark for rice processing. Additionally the processing costs are increasing due to rise in energy costs. Also more than 40% of grains are lost in post-harvest and processing levels.

All the customers are always cost sensitive and concentrate basically to buy products on cheap rates. Hence the primary challenge for JFM is to make their products cost effective in this competitive age. JFMs main area of operation is southern and western parts of India and wish to expand their business in the Northern parts of India. The companys target customers are rice millers, dal millers, spice & nuts manufactures and exporters and also processed food manufacturers. Ayassa and Sons Rice Mill

Engaged in processing rice. Located in Kanauj, UP
yassa and Sons Rice Mill was set up in 2008. The com pany has three partners and Mr. Mukaddar Ali is one of the partners of the company. It is headquartered in Kanauj, UP. The company supplies processed rice. Our main business is rice. We purchase paddy from the farmers and sell it after processing it into rice. The company mainly deals in arava variety of rice, which is a thick variety of rice. Rice Processing The rice processing takes 4-5 days. The processing period starts in October and goes on till March/April, says Mr. Ali. The company uses Indian rice processing machinery. We bought it from Hyderabad, informs Mr. Ali. He maintains that he is satisfied with the performance of the machinery and says he has not yet faced any problem. When asked about the challenges faced, Mr. Ali says, We faced many types of financial problems, administrative problems, and labor problems initially. There are many problems when you are starting out. But once you are established in a field, those problems gradually fade away. The biggest problem that I face today is the staff. The staffs dont work as per my expectations.

There are very few people who take the responsibility. He adds, Unlike other industries we dont face labor shortage. Target Market The company supplies its products mainly to the government. We supply to Food Corporation of India, which deals according to the standards. Government purchases 70% and I sell the remaining 30% in the market, says Mr. Ali. Speaking about competition, Mr. Ali says, These days the company that maintains quality finds success in the market. Price is not the main concern as it is decided by the government. There is no change in that. Government prices are issued in the season. We have to take care of the quality only. Quality Control To maintain the quality of the rice the company has to ensure polish quality and removal of broken rice. Mr. Ali adds, We have to control the broken rice to maintain the quality. We have to maintain the polish quality also. We take out all the rice that is broken more than 22% out of the machinery. The rice that is broken less than 22% goes into the rest of the rice. Explaining the process, he says, We fit a net in the machinery which ensures that only less than 22% rice falls through it. More

Agritalk - Floriculture

Is open field flower cultivation an attractive business?

During the 1990s, big capital intensive floriculture projects took off in India. Some of them like Karuturi have been a big global success. Many others faced enormous financial difficulties and struggled to repay their bank loans. But what about less capital intensive open field flower cultivation? Is there a future for cultivating flowers without repeating the mistakes of the 1990s?

Benefits of Open Field Cultivation

r. Ganesh Prajapat, Executive Director, ACI Agro Solution, says, Open field cultivation is a good idea. The flower cultivation process must be clearly linked to the end user. There must be a clear chain of process like flower cultivation, storage, processing, product development and marketing. Most of the agriculture produce are perishable in nature, with flowers being highly perishable. Open cultivation should be directly attached to the storage and processing unit. He adds, In the open field cultivation, one must be clearly aware of the climatic condition. It is best suited in regions with minimum climatic variations, especially at the time of blooming. Flowers are the precious gifts of the nature that need extensive care. All the questions start and end with one problem: lack of proper training and guidance to the farmer. Risk minimization is very important for the open cultivation. Mr. Prajapat briefs the primary factors for flower cultivation: The farm must be near the wholesale and retail market. The farm must have clear sunshine. The farm must be located at well aerated place. There must be refrigerated storage facility. The flowers must reach the end customer easily within 6 hours.

The farm labor must be well trained. The cultivation must be market oriented. Diversification of flower cultivation is essential. There must be diversification to generate regular income, seasonal demand flowers, essential oil extraction flowers, and export purpose flowers.

sumption and export potentiality, adding, Any farmer with a land holdings ranging from 5 cents to any extent can start floriculture depending on the marketing opportunities available in the nearby towns. If small and marginal farmers are going to take up cultivation of jasmine, crossandra, marigold, tube-rose, annual chrysanthimum and roses,

We invited members to share their opinions in the AgricultureInformation.com forum about the prospects of less capital intensive open field floriculture. The Agri Experts participating in the discussion include: Mr. G. Ananda Rao, Agricultural Finance Consultant Mr. Atul R. Patwardhan, Floriculture Consultant Mr. Ganesh Prajapat, Executive Director, ACI Agro Solution

Floriculture has great export potential and can bring in foreign reserve, adds Mr. Prajapat. Mr. Atul R.Patwardhan, Chintamani Consultancy and Services, too avers, Cut flowers have good market potential. By exporting, cut flowers growers/exporters can earn good foreign exchange reserve, adding, Open cultivation flowers have short life span. So if we store them properly and use refrigerated vans for transportation, then we can increase their vase life. Mr. G. Ananda Rao, Agricultural Finance Consultant, says, Floriculture gives ample scope for economic development of farming community, and flower industry has very good prospects due to internal con-

besides others, they can earn their lively hood.

Open Field Cultivation

gricultureInformation.com member, Rajsekhar is planning to grow roses to meet the local demand during marriage seasons. I would also like to know the ground work to be done. I have been to Kadiyam recently where severe power crisis effect can be seen with floriculture companies, he inquires. Mr. Prajapat responds, You have to first identify the end user of the flowers like the people involved in floor decoration, making the garlands, decorating the vehicles, and people having tent house business, besides

others. This will give you an idea about the requirement. Then you can identify the peak marriage season. Your crop must be ready at that time for the flower plucking. You will have to work out on the post-harvest management like who will deliver the plants, and who will collect the flowers. After that you will have to find out about your financial situation such as what will be the costing and the returns. You should also find out how many types of the flowers they need. Then you have to identify the potential flower growing land for your cultivation. Mr. C Karuppanan of Madurai, TN, asks, Could you kindly explain the prospects of open field cultivation of rose, like, the type of rose, cost per acre, the financial return and more? Mr. Rao says, Depending upon the scope of marketing, farmers can start floriculture on their lands which are having irrigation facilities. Depending on the following soil and climatic conditions farmers can select flowers suitable to their local conditions:

Mr. Atul R.Patwardhan

Mr. Atul R.Patwardhan is Mechanical Engineer by education. His deep inclination towards agriculture and aspiration to help farmers motivated him to set up the proprietary firm, Chintamani Consultancy and Services in 2006 to provide consultation to farmers. He says, I feel that in India if farmers will grow, then & then only our country will grow. I like to provide appropriate knowledge to farmers. I work very transparently with farmers. He feels India has good potential for Floriculture business. He explains, The market is large. If farmers can produce good quality cut flowers, then the chances of earning money are good. I would like to convey the farmers or promoters who want to start Floriculture business that they should get into this business if they have interest in floriculture. They should be prepared to devote time to take care of the plants. If the business is made with great care, then production of cut flowers is a very good business. concludes Mr. Patwardhan. Investment Required

ember Nidhi Shivani who owns 3 acres of land in Mysore district in Karnataka asks, Is floriculture profitable? Also I want to do something that is worth the investment. Mr. Rao informs about the capital requirement to start flower farm, For open fields, the cost of cultivation will range from Rs. 20000 30000 per acre for flowers like roses, jasmine, crossandra, gladiolus, chrysanthimum, and marigold. He adds, Cost of poly houses/green houses will be Rs.3 lakhs per 100 sq mts (Rs.120 lakhs per acre). For raising rose flowers under greenhouse conditions in one hectare area requires (fixed and recurring) Rs.275- 300 lakhs. Mr. Patwardhan says, Farmers interested to start production of cut flowers must un& Industry Survey

derstand the basics of growing cut flowers. They should also make survey regarding market before starting the business.

Financing
peaking about financing, Mr. Rao says, For cultivation of flowers like jasmine, marigold, roses, and tuberose (lily) on fields, financial help can be availed. Crop loans up are available (cost of cultivation is Rs.20000 to 25000 per acre) with hypothecation of flower crops with third party guarantee. Farmers can avail short term loans up to Rs. 3 lakhs with 9% interest with 2 3 % interest subvention. If cost of cultivation is more than 1 lakh for short term loans as well as for term loans, mortgage of land /vacant site/building etc are required with at least 125% value of the loan availed from Bank for new agricultural projects. They have to produce the following documents ascertain the unit cost of the project: 1. Ryot Pass books 2. Field Sketch 3. Computerized Adandal copy 4. Land Revenue receipts 5. Encumbrance certificate for 25-30 years 6. Legal Opinion (Banks empanelled lawyer) 7. Valuation report of the property (Banks approved valuer) 8. Estimates for developmental structures like ,Farm house,Godown,Workers quarters 9. Land development, minor irrigation requirements poly houses/green houses

10. Quotations for pump sets/Drip systems 11. Project Report" Farmers have to bring 25% margin and ask for 75% of the unit cost as term loan, he adds.

Diversification from Traditional Crops

r. Patwardhan feels floriculture busi ness is good but it cannot be compared with regular cereal crops cultivation. He says, Wheat and paddy are required by us during our day to day life and they are essential. So farmers must grow them on regular basis. Mr. Prajapat shares a news item from The Daily Pioneer, where the center is asking

Government to focus more on floriculture, horticulture: Sharad Pawar

TIMES OF INDIA, 11/09/2012 nion agriculture minister, Mr. Sharad Pawar has said that the union government will divert its focus from food grain production to floriculture and horticulture, as farmers in India have produced more than enough food grains to ensure food security. Mr. Pawar was speaking at a function organized by the Rose society in Pune on Saturday. He said, Farmers in our country have worked hard and as a result all government godowns are overflowing. In fact now the government has no space to store food grains. This year India has exported 40 lakh tonne rice, 30 lakh tonne sugar and 25 lakh tonne wheat to other countries. And still we have sufficient food grains in stock He added, We have succeeded in resolving the food security problem and now the government is diverting its focus from food grain production. Now India needs to concentrate on floriculture and horticulture. The government will help farmers to establish a chain of cold houses and encourage them to grow more flowers and fruits with international market in mind. World over, the market for flowers and fruits is expanding. In over 600 billion dollar flower market, Indias share is minimal. Efforts will be taken to increase this share said Mr. Pawar. He said that India stood second in the list of largest fruit and vegetable producing nations in the world.

the states to diversify from wheat and paddy since these crops require a lot of water resources. He says, Floriculture is the major focus area for the diversification. The mild climatic conditions of these states can give very good return. But the farmers are suspicious about the success of diversification. It will require a lot of new efforts, new technology, new knowledge, and new equipment. The farmers dont know the technology for harvesting, storage and processing. The market is also a big problem for the diversification for new crop. Adding, he says, Yes, it is true the farmers need the proper training. This will also open up employment opportunity for young agriculture graduates in the farming sector. The possibility of the new industry will open the gates of employment in other sectors also. The open floriculture as per the climatic condition will help farmers in the cost minimization and it will increase the profit of farmers. Further speaking about government initiative, he adds, Government is taking initiative to promote floriculture in India. Please go through the article below that was published in The Times of India for the same. Mr. Patwardhan maintains though people sustained huge losses in floriculture in 1990s, things are improving and people are willing to try floriculture again. I have provided consultation to farmers for rose cultivation under controlled environment like poly houses, Further replying to Mr. Karuppanans query, he adds, For growing cut flowers under 1 acre poly house (medium tech ) for cut rose the cots is Rs. 40 lacs, for gerbera it is Rs.47 lacs, and for carnation Rs.50 lacs ."

Different Flower Cultivation Methods

r. Rao informs all types of flowers like roses, jasmine, crossandra, tube rose, marigold, chaina aster, crossandra, heliconia, and chrysanthimim cut greens (filler plants like golden rods and asparagus) can be cultivated in fields. Cut flowers like roses, carnation, and gerbera are cultivated in poly houses and green houses. Mr. Patwardhan further explains the cultivation methods used for cut flowers. Planting material can be cultivated on beds made up of soil and other required components, in the grow bags or in pots. Cultivation on beds made from soil and other required components is a better choice, he says. He adds, Selection of variety is very important. It requires lot of knowledge about the trends in market. So the variety is either suggested by the Project Consultant or by planting material suppliers.

Training
r. Patwardhan stresses on training before taking up floriculture. Training should be taken before starting the cut flower production. Training facility is available with Agriculture Colleges. Farmers cannot understand everything about cut flowers business in this training program. But they can get basic knowledge about cut flowers cultivation. Before starting the business farmers also should meet floriculture consultants and under their guidance they should carry out their projects, he avers, adding,

peaking about the pros and cons of flo riculture, Mr. Patwardhan says, If the projects are done with care and if farmers are devoting their time in this business, then this is a good business. The flowers are delicate, so the cut flowers should be packed and transported with great care. The time required for transporting to the market should be minimum. He adds, Depending on the type of flowers to be cultivated the cost may range from few thousands (for SF/MF) to two to three crores for greenhouse cultivation (large farmers). In flower cultivation higher profits are generated after meeting all the expenses. Mr. Prajapat lists the benefits of floriculture: The market is developing and expecting a blast growth There are both regular and seasonal demand The production is more in comparison to the other field crops 365 day employment opportunity Duration of flowers cultivation is small in comparison to field crops Domestic markets of flowers are strong Export demand is also increasing Maximum utilization of the land Government is providing assistance for the same He says, As per Assocham, the floriculture industry will cross the business of INR 8000 crores within 2015. The current business is only of INR 3500 crores. The market share of Indian floriculture industry in world is around 0.61 . Assocham is expecting this figure to go up to around 0.89. The current world business is 6 lac crores, which is expected to cross 9 crores within 2015 with a growth rate of 15%. Rose is having a major share in the world floriculture business by around 75%, while the Indian rose business is 65%. There is increase in regular demand from tier II and III cities. The major international markets are Australia, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Netherlands, US, UK, and other countries of Europe and the Middle East and the major domestic market is Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Surat, Kanpur, Lucknow and Patna. In this scenario, the floriculture business is really highly beneficial. One must start it with proper infrastructure so that the post-harvest loss can be minimized and make sure that the flowers are reaching at the final consumption point in excellent condition, he adds. Agri Organization

Green India Agrivet

Engaged in organic agriculture projects. Registered office in Bhubaneswar, Odisha

reen India Agrivet Limited (GIAL) was established in 2010. It has its corporate of fice in New Delhi and the reg istered office in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The company was founded by Mr. Sunil Kumar Panda, MD and CEO, and late Mr. Sandeep Singh. The company is engaged in organic agriculture projects. Current Activities : Currently the company is engaged in running an organic project, Adoption and Certification of Horticultural Crops, through NHM at Bhawanipatna, Odisha. Under this organic project, we have selected 5 villages in the first year and divided into 10 clusters for easy operation and organic certification. Apart from above entry point programs, GIAL is assisting cluster bore wells, vermi compost pit, NADEP pit, planting of neem tree, training on good organic package of practices, training on hygienic storage of post-harvest production at the village level. And at district and state level, training on organic certification procedure, training on healthy production, village visit, farmer and district administration interaction, informs Mr. Panda. Adding, Our recent plan is to start with hub in village level and retail chain operation of vegetables, cereals and pulses under organic certified brands in about 40 stores. This year we have been again allotted with 5 more villages and are planning to cover at least 50% of the district under organic production in coming years. Challenges Faced : One of the major challenges faced by the company is convincing the farmers about price protection. Mr. Panda says, We cannot get the organic production equal to production through inorganic practices.

He adds, We have presented ourselves in International Organic Trade Fair at Mauritius and BIOFAG, Germany. We are planning to take these produces to international and domestic markets so as to give a better price to farmers. Another issue is to keep the farmers with us. Therefore we have started with E-OOFA (E Odisha Organic Farmers Association) registration under Society Act. We are also raising awareness about safe food through TV talks with experts. Organic Turmeric and Chilly : Speaking about procurement of organic turmeric and chilly, Mr.Panda says, Kandhmal district in Odisha has been declared as default organic area for turmeric. We have a plan to advocate chilly in our project place which will be grown organically. We are under IC 1 phase, therefore 100% organic production is expected by 2013-14. Traditionally farmers in our project site are growing chilly but not commercially. We can procure Turmeric from Kandhmal district if placed with volumes of order. We can get turmeric and chilly though village committees of Kandhmal. Therefore we have a separate mandate to advocate crop planning in our project areas. Target Customers : The company has entered into an agreement with Future

Sunil Kumar Panda

Group, Spencer, and Reliance for trading. We feel there is ample opportunity in India. Present demand of organic product is only in urban pockets. If production is good, prices can be adjusted accordingly. We have planned to retain only 10% of the profit and give the rest to farmers with no middleman commission. We are also planning to set up an organic vegetable haat at Bhubaneswar once full-fledged production starts. We are also focusing on getting complete certification through SGS, says Mr. Panda. He adds, We are entering the international market through Mauritius. In India we are planning to market our products in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, which are logistically advantageous. We have also offices in C G and Gujarat which can also be explored. Marketing Strategy : The company is planning to launch its brand by the end of this year. They plan to market their products through media, special guest lectures, road shows, ads in movie theaters, and street plays. Keeping the organic produce at affordable price can give us success in domestic market, says Mr. Panda. In our system, we supply all the inputs, allied inputs, technical inputs, and advice to all the contracted farmers under our project," says Mr. Panda. Storage & Transportation : The company has tied up with Blue Star for cold storage of products. The first one of 7500 Mts is at Khurda district in Odisha is. In this we have pre-cooling chamber, ripening chamber, special vegetable cabins (2500 mts.), fruits, wild minor produces can be stored. Poultry

Rudras Breeders
Driven by passion for Chicken, Mr. Satish Kumar established poultry farm in Jolarpettai to earn his livelihood
udras Breeders poultry farm was the brainchild of Mr. Satish Kumar in 2009. It was started in the year 2010 in Jolarpettai in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Sakthivel S, is the proprietor and Manager (Business Development) of Rudras Breeders. Satish wanted to start a business to contribute value to society and to earn livelihood. He ventured into this business in 2009. Mr. Sathishs passion was chicken. He used to purchase chicks in retail from farmers and fellow people in and around Jolarpettai. His passion was opening a quality country chicken farm. So, he visited farms of other people, and traveled far off places in Tamil Nadu to get first hand

to start with. The firms vision is to become the largest quality pure country chicken provider by the year 2017. So, the firm is inching towards their goal step by step daily. As the demand is more, the firm decided to enter into tie-ups with fellow farmers who hatch country chicken and adhere to the firms standards and quality. To start the firm in a small way, Mr.Shakthivel borrowed Rs.4,000 from his friend Mr.Thiayagarajan. The firm faced a lot of hardships during the initial stages of its operation. Mr. Shakthivel picked up the nuances of rearing chicken initially by reading books and getting a one day training. One dedicated supervisor to supervise 3,000 birds and one helper to clean farm and its

Sakthivel S to sell your products to bigger players in the market. In marketing, one should get rid of shyness. To attract customers one should give discounts also. In this way one can increase their customer base. When the customer base is solid then there is no question of looking back. The show goes on. For better on-line presence even Rudras tried many but www.agricultureinformation.com gave new customers and thus the business is flourished. For Rudras success the firm remembers the agri portals help. Rudras Breeders thought that the farmers were their customers. Today the company boasts that apart from farmers, IT engineers, lecturers, chicken hobbyists and unemployed youths were their customers. The firms goal is to sell at least 10 chicks to any one who wants to rear chicken in their backyard. So the firm is open to all. The firms first breakthrough came when it sent 10 chicks to Salem successfully and got repeat orders from the customers. When chicks are delivered in small numbers the customer bears the cost. When the firm gets big orders the firm bears the transportation cost. So the firm built a very strong relationships with many frequent travelers, delivery vans and other means of vehicle owners to deliver the chicks safely. To transport live chicks and hatching eggs safely is important. So the firm has a cordial relationship with transport owners and delivery agents. Chicks are delivered across the country through mini lorry, bus, delivery vans, rail and by air. Health and hygiene of chicks Health and hygiene is the most important thing in chicken rearing. One should not be lazy in this because the smallest negligence will cost chicks life and money. The firm maintains bio security measures. It cleans the farm twice a day for wet litters, feeders washed once a day, litter changed once a week. Lysol is sprayed and spilled feed is removed now and then to stop flies and rats. Fencing to the farm should be strong to prevent predators like cats, dogs and raccoons. Vaccination on specified days to chicks is a

information about hatching chickens. After initial setbacks in this business, the firm makes an online presence through www.agricultureinforma-tion.com a year back and now the firm is sending their chicks to far off places in India like New Delhi, Jamnagar, kota etc. The company is grown and committed to serve any number of needs to its repeat customers and thus the sales improved gradually over a period of time. What started as a small 16 X 11 sq. ft farm is now 800 sq. ft big farm and another 1,500 sq. ft farm will be operational shortly. There are bigger broiler chicken business giants. But Rudras Breeders main concern was hatching country chicken. It was not produced in mass and not sold in mass in Tamil Nadu. The firm decided to go for hatching country chicken and purchased small flocks

equipments per 1,000 birds is what is needed to start with. One can starts poultry farm in a small way with an initial investment of Rs.30,000 and monthly operational cost of Rs. 4-5,000. A piece of advise to the starters Pick any of your passion or whatever you believe in. The main thing one wants to do is that start in a small way. One should not worry about returns, cash flow or margins. If one is doing the business means money is definitely coming out of that business. Talk to them or learn about that business. Even Rudras too started and failed twice. So the firm learnt the lessons without losing much. After the initial setbacks is overcome, the next step is to sell your products. One should go for networking. Networking means meeting people and asking them how

must to prevent diseases. First two months of a country chicken rearing is most important. The firm feeds standard manufactured feed till two months old. The firm gives variety of feed viz veggies, spinach and worms etc. Maintaining health and hygiene of chicks is the prime concern. The latest technology has also crept into poultry farming. They are automatic feeder, drinker and gas brooders. Mr. Sakthivel S., is an MCA graduate from Anna University, Coimbatore. He is the proprietor and Manager (Business Development) of Rudras Breeders. Mr. Sakthivel says that the toughest period in rearing chicken is summer as the heat increases the chicken is prone to diseases. Cooling the chicken by spraying water on the roofs, supplying lemonades to the chicken and sometimes we have to spray water on them too. The firm has got many big plans. By mid2013, we are going to add excellent country chicken breed. By 2017, the firm will have a larger country chicken breeder with customer service team, healthy, pure and quality country chicks and chicken providers in India. Rudras R & D, Rudras pet feed division, Rudras aquarium, Rudras kennels, Rudras chicken food restaurants were in the pipeline, Mr. Sakthivel concludes. Commodity Trading
ealing in dehydrated food products, Chimanbhai Veghela in Mahuva, Gujarat, established VT Foods Pri vate Limited in 2007. The company finds its humble beginnings in the local markets where it gradually began to gain recognition and higher claims in the market share. Now, the company has a 5 to 6 Crore annual turnover with 75 to 100 employees during the peak season, giving them enough market power to expand to exports. Mr. Manish Joshi is the companys marketing manager, a graduate of Business Communications with a certificate in computing. Products and Reach VT Foods Pvt Ltd focuses on the production of food items that are made from onions and garlic only. One of the offerings of the company is dehydrated onion and garlic, which boasts an 18 month long shelf life. The dehydrated onion comes in various forms such as kibbled, powdered, minced, chopped and granules. Also produced by the company are toasted onions that are made from red onions to give it more heat and a more appealing color. The company typically sources their raw materials from the APMC, a market that is open to all farmers to sell their produce at. However, VT Foods does keep an open mind to farmers who have chosen to abstain from selling their fresh produce at the APMC. Farmers interested in selling their goods to the company are welcome to contact them. Due to high demand, the company produces approximately 900 1000 MT of produce each year. 99% of the total product is exported to various countries in Europe and Russia under the VT Foods brand while the remaining 1% is sold locally in India. VT Foods ensures high quality on all of their products through the proper control of moisture, hygiene, foreign matter and practicing controlled packing methods. Challenges Despite their success, the company still regularly faces challenge in production, marketing and even exporting. For example, the competition in their field is tough, with competitors continuously looking for means to get an edge on each other as only the top quality providers can sustain themselves in the market. Mr. Manish explained, We have to provide better quality produce to the international buyers to sustain ourselves in the market. The company runs into problems with exportation because of time and the change of government policies. Often, VT

VT Foods
Exporters of dehydrated onion and garlic to overseas market. Located at Mahuva, Gujarat
Foods had trouble with finding empty containers on time for their shipments, which results in late deliveries to their customers. Additionally, the drawback policy of the VKGUY was recently lessened to 1% from its original 5%, an exportation policy that was very beneficial to manufacturers. Maintaining the quality of the produce can also be an issue, thus visual checks are routinely implemented upon receiving of the raw materials. Marketing VT Foods puts a tremendous amount of value to its marketing team, which truly serves as the companys backbone. For instance, the company heavily relies on its marketing team to edge out their competition, many of which have also begun to export, competing for business in the international market. It was the marketing savvy of the team to properly present the high quality of product that led the company to receive repeat orders from various international buyers. Marketing representatives in Russia have also proven to be extremely beneficial to the company. Due to Russia being such a large market, the competition in the country is fierce. The marketing team utilizes technology to its fullest extent in order to communicate with international clients and to identify the existing level of demands. The company stresses the importance of every marketing representative having extensive knowledge on their product in order to successfully make sales. Target Customers and Growth The company targets spice users, food processors, big malls, various traders and end

Manish Joshi users as their target customers. Casting a wide net is a great help to the companys sustainability and ensures a steady client base that the company expects will be filtering orders in year round. Mr. Manish said, Most of our customers ask for a product with their specifications in mind. We check their specifications and see if its matches the standard specs of our products before confirming an order. Though the company has already achieved success and sustainability in the market, they seem to foresee some challenges in the coming year. We still have not had any rain this year so we expect there to be very little crop growth in the coming year. Due to the expected shortage of raw materials, we are assuming that the prices for these materials will rise, Mr. Manish shared. Milestones and Future Plans When the company was first founded in 2007, its main goal was simply to reach a high enough market share that they would be able to begin exports. Though the road was not always easy, VT Foods has achieved their exportation goals and has been able to increase their reach to even more foreign markets. Despite the hardships that the company expects to experience in the next year, they are still committed to furthering the capabilities of the company. Mr. Manish shared, We expect to double our turnover within the next 4 to 5 years. NEWS - Latest news and developments An Indian scientist! Transformed farming in Latin America!
ndians being honoured in countries of their adoption is now scarcely news, especially with the growth of the white collar diaspora. But Mohan Kohli, honoured by Paraguay earlier this month, is different. Having worked under the legendry Norman Borlaug at a time when agricultural research was yet to slip entirely into the domain of corporates, Dr. Kohli has got recognition for nearly four decades of unremitting research to step up wheat production in a wide swathe of Latin American countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. On May 18, Dr. Kohli walked up the dais at San Carlos University in Asuncion to receive an Honorary Doctorate as a mark of gratitude from Paraguayans for transforming their country to a net wheat exporter production increased from a meagre 30,000 tonnes in 1978 to 1.2 million tonnes today. Thanks to Dr. Kohli's efforts, Paraguay earned $230 million from wheat exports last year. Agricultural lands become sensitive topic! the maximum area would remain capped at 5,000 hectares, according to the draft policy that has reviewed. For multi-services units, SEZ for a specific sector, port or airport, the ministry has proposed reducing the minimum size to 40 hectares from 100 now. In the case of north-eastern states, union territories and some hilly states, the minimum area requirement may be brought down to 50 hectares from the current 200. Reduction in the SEZ land requirement will come as a significant relief to developers. worlds population will exceed 9 billion, up from 7 billion in 2011. This means farmers will need to produce 70 per cent more food on less land than ever before. Across the globe, this increased demand for food, together with demand from competing uses, has been placing unprecedented pressure on many agricultural production systems. Increased urbanisation and limited water resources have constantly added to this crisis and the potential of climate change impacts are just beginning to show, demanding immediate attention and action, Zehr said. Over 55 per cent of the net sown area in India lacks irrigation facilities and hence, farmers rely wholly on rain water for crop growth. Water stress is the most important abiotic stress affecting the production of crops like maize and rice. Nearly 6.7 million hectare of farmland in the country has been affected by salinity, with Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra having the highest percentage of affected land area, she added. According to a Corporate Catalyst India survey, of the total share of 14.5 per cent that agriculture and allied sectors contributed to Indias GDP in 2010-11, agriculture alone accounted for 12.3 per cent, followed by forestry and logging at 1.4 per cent and fishing at 0.7 per cent. Stating that greater varietal and species diversity would enable agricultural systems to maintain productivity over a wide range of conditions, Zehr said on Sunday, the benefits of Bt cotton, the first genetically-modified crop to be approved for com-

ith the world population all set to exceed 9 billion in less than 50 years, there will be increasingly greater demands on agriculture, according to Calestous Juma, an internationally-recognised authority in the application of science and technology to sustainable development worldwide. Clearly, the task at hand is to significantly increase agriculture productivity on the existing land while conserving natural resources. Therefore, it is critical to maximise the agricultural toolkit, including plant biotechnology, to feed the world for decades to come, said Juma, professor (practice of international development) and director (The Science, Technology and Globalisation Project) at Harvard University. The original goal of plant biotechnology, was to improve crops and minimise the environmental impact of agricultural activities. But, it (plant biotech) has also displayed the potential to enhance nutritional benefits of many foods. Admittedly, the major cause of

It is the absence of essential nutrients from diets and dysfunctional foodgrain distribution systems in the developing nations, he said, adding that billions of people worldwide Stating that while biotech insectresistant crops like Bt cotton and maize reduce the need for pesticide use, saving farmers time and money, Juma said herbicide-tolerant crops had significantly reduced the back-breaking work of weeding and promoted sustainable practices like conservation tillage. Moreover, drought-resistant crops have the potential to allow re-vegetation of lands no longer suitable for cultivation, he said. According to studies, the uptake of biotech crops has seen one of the fastest adoption rates for any agricultural technology in history with it rising from 1.7 million hectares worldwide in 1996 to 160 million hectare in 2011, accounting for a 94-fold increase. Indias food security depends on producing cereal and legume crops as well as more fruits and vegetables to meet the demands of a growing population with rising incomes. kraines move to ban wheat exports from November 15 could trigger demand for the Indian grain. Wheat exporters see a potential rise in Indian shipments. The Ukraine export ban will definitely benefit us. However, it all depends on how the Australian crop, scheduled for harvest next month, shapes up, said Anil Monga, Chairman, Emmsons International Ltd, a Delhi-based exporter. Ukraine is one of the top 10 global wheat exporters, which saw its harvest decline by a third due to drought this year. The fact that Indian wheat has already been accepted in the West Asian market should accelerate the exports. Wheat exports have crossed three million tonnes, a bulk of which has been by the private trade. So far, Indian exports have been to Korea, Taiwan, Yemen and neighbouring Bangladesh, Sri Lanka among others. Major buyers of Ukraine wheat such as Egypt and West Asian nations have covered their requirement till December-January. gri/rural sector is being squeezed into more and more defenseless shrinking spaces! The London-based Financial Times (FT) recently carried a long article on India's booming media scene. There is something like a 10 crore English speaking, English-reading public for the Indian English-language newspapers. The Times of India, FT concedes, is the world's No.1 newspaper! Also, when it comes to the Indian language newspapers, they are also booming, and they overtake TOI, and TOI comes only as the sixth largest sold newspaper in India. But then what about the credibility of the Indian media, both the print and the TV news channels? Oh,they are the most prone to corruption of all sorts! Indian media has not much credibility! Which country has much media credibility? Though the FT didnt pose that question, we like to pose it here? Certainly, the UK press-both print and the TV, has some degree of high credibility. May be next we might put the USA, may be the French and even the German media. The Western liberal traditions have much to do with their media credibility too. In India, there is now so much condemnable fall in standards! The paid-news is now a menance and menacing proportions of the Indian media fall is now widely seen and spotted out. The Press Council (with a much admired no-nonsense chairman) seems not capable of doing anything about this media corruption. Now, as for the agri, rural media scene, it is as good as dead or plainly unequal to the challenges of the times. Now, with the new economic reforms, announced, the agri/rural sector is very likely to lose much with the latest round of talks and discussions within and outside the various ministerial groups. This magazine, in its 25th year of publication, may be one of the few survivors of this squeeze! What chance for the agri/rural future in this country? When the audacious scene is that those who are simply cut off from the rural people, the very people whom are variously described by the power-hungry urban elites who in their bid for arbitrary power could muscle into the rural vote-banks promising the moon and may try to take over huge quantities of land with no room for any chance for the genuine rural survivors. We, the publishers of this magazine, are directly engaged in agricultural cultivation! This is not for publicity sake. But to send it the message that full-time politicians, the political class now have also become the country's new generation or new class of new capitalists! The new oligarchs, the new wealth creators, if not the genuine entrepreneurs. Those who grab agricultural lands, those who are in power or who have just lost power and yet they had engaged while in power in grabbing agricultural lands cheaply and had resold or holding back those very lands for future high prices. The examples are now abounding in many instances. Some are high profile cases, why high celebrity cases! So, we need not elaborate when we ask: what chance for the future of genuine farmers? Genuine, traditional farmers, farming communities a new charter of rights to protect and also prosper as farmers in this new emerging and threatening environment where there is so much competition to accumulate wealth, usually, more agriculture properties are being grabbed (acquired legally is a very improbable current scenario). Now, we need some definite legislation to protect individual farmers, traditional farmers, also the so-called big farmers! There is a conspiracy of silence when it comes to defend the traditional farmers.

hina is now on everyone's minds. The big leaders, the common people, not just in China and India but even in other countries and peoples, from Japan to South China Sea countries. We have just been to China and back from a week-long holiday. Ever since the return we have been reading every piece of literature on China, from established classics by such authorities like John King Fairbank (The great Chinese revolution:1800-1985), Edgar Snow (Red Star Over China) to the latest expose of sorts by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday (Mao: The Unknown Story). Even Jung Chang's earlier autobiography (Wild Swans) were adding to our understanding to the present day China's mindset. These sort of books are of course not available in China at all, though we visited the Shanghai' biggest bookstore in search of English books. Alas! There were none of the books any developed country would sell and enlighten the citizens. In Kuala Lampur, we were surprised to find one of the world's biggest book stores, as good as any in the West.So wide choices of subjects and titles. Now, we are in the midst of remembering, both in India and also in China of the 50th year of the India-China border wars. Reconciliation? Though China had put out the message of reconciliation, saying that China and India are partners and there is room for everyone to live and do one's job, there are enough to point out that the Chinese authorities are not yet ready to really to realise that it is only by way of openly discussing and talking things out, there could be a permanent sense of people and relief. This, the Chinese authorities havent done, it seems. There are reports, as reported by one leading Indian newspaper which has a Peking-based correspondent, there is a strong feeling in Chinese foreign policy making that the India's borders with China that Indias something like some 4000 and odd km long borders are not settled yet. The LAC (Line of Actual Control) can't be recognised as the legally defined borders. Also, China continues to hold on to an ambiguous stance on India's sovereignty in

India-China thoughts

We have to engage with China, no other way!

India has to live with China: in trade, diplomacy and also of course in true understanding of the people and the country's new rulers.
Arunachal Pradesh, in Jammu and Kashmir and also more seriously in Akshin China. So, the so far held, something like the fourteen rounds of border talks havent achieved any tangible results. Also, there is also clear statement by "India that it wont accept LAC". So, there is a real, unresolved border problem, border dispute with China. Also, there are reports, the latest put out just a few days ago by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBT) that China had violated India air space thrice this year! So, what India should be doing? Of course, we have to engage with China, engage continuously and also in many wide fields. India and China are to hold their annual Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) in New Delhi in the last week of November, both countries launched a renewed push to address a ballooning trade deficit which, officials say, is beginning to increasingly strain the trade relationship. China indicated its willingness to provide better market access by promoting India as a partner-country at a major automobile components fair. Indian officials said they would, on their part, do more to support investments in China and help equip companies, which are often unaware of the specific challenges of the China market, to make more robust entries. India has identified information technology, pharmaceuticals and the engineering industry as sectors where it will push exports. The Indian Government and the Confederation of Indian Industry held a first-ever India Show to promote Indian companies at Chinas biggest auto expo. While India has expressed concerns on market access, China, on its part, has expressed worries about barriers to investment in India, on account of security concerns, and a spate of anti-dumping investigations filed by India. Chinese officials say India has filed more cases than any other country. Next months SED, scheduled to be held on November 26, will grapple with some of these issues. Of course, there are certain new observations. One, there is a radical change inside China today. In the place of one-man dictatorship we saw under Mao, why even under the formidable Demg, we see today there is a more "democratic"(?) inner-party democratic decisionmaking. In recent days we saw the expulsion of BO Xilai, as he became too radical to the central leadership. And his equally powerful wife Gu Kailai was put on trial and faces a suspended death suspension for murdering an English man, a businessman of the family. So, there is some opening or weakening of the dictatorial hold of the party machine on the political top leadership. The Noble political transition also saw a shift to a new generation, the fifth generation leadership. Third, we also see increasing internal pressure for more freedoms. We ourselves saw so many freedoms of the common Chinese citizens these days. Trade deficit, trust deficit There is, first, the India-China trade. Besides, the trust deficit, we have a huge trade deficit as well. China is India's biggest trade partner and the bilateral trade has soared from a few billion dollars to the current 74 billion dollars! There are also other indicators, the latest being the expose of top leaders like the current premier When Jiabo family in some illegal wealth acquisition! Such reports one might not expect some years ago. Not now, it seems. Corruption The New York Times expose is being discussed in Hong Kong based newspapers and it also spread to China means there is definitely some change in internal politics. So, as China becomes more economically powerful, it is now the world's second largest economy, Indias per capita is estimated as 1,500 dollars while in China it is estimated as 5,000 dollars. So, with more incomes, the Chinese citizens now travel abroad, Chinese students are now the largest in the US universities, there is a new affluent middle class in China, the malls are overflowing with consumers, with all top international brands are sold in China. There are all the French luxury good brands in Shanghai. There are also three highend luxury car brands, with their show rooms. Rolls-Royce, Porsche, Maseroti! So, we have to engage with China, come what may! V.Isvarmurti, Founder & Chairman Agriculture & Industry Survey
