Advance praise for Antioxidants Against Cancer “Once I began to treat cancer patients with antioxidants, I saw most of them control their illness. Ralph Moss's definitive book: on this subject will show you, and your doctors, just how and. why that bappens. And it should convince anyone that anti- oxidant therapy should be offered to every cancer patient.” —Roserr C. ATKINS, M.D., author, Dr. Atkins’ Age-Defying Diet Revolution “Antisidames Against Cancer offers an excellent orientation t0 a very complex science. Ralph Moss provides vital information. ‘on antioxidant therapy for anyone fighting cancer or actively seeking to prevent it. Any stritegy to overcome malignancy requires an elevated understanding of antioxidant biology. With his illuminating examples and pragmatic guidelines, Ralph Moss enables readers to understand their choices for supplementation and cancer treatment such as radiation. and chemotherapy.” —Kermi I. Bock, M.D., Director of the Institute for Integrative Cancer Care, Evanston, Ilinois; Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago “Dr. Ralph Moss is a beacon of knowledge in the controversial and contradictory world of alternative medicine. This book spells out a blueprint for appropriate supplement use in patients undergoing cancer treatment.” —Jonstnan Coun, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients “Dr. Ralph Moss is a veritable clearing house of dependable information about cutting-edge approaches to cancer prevention and treatment. This is a valuable look atthe science surrounding the role of antioxidants in health. Congratulations to Dr. Moss on a fine achievement.” —Larey Dossey, M.D., author, Reinventing Medicine, Executive editor, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine “Antioxidants Against Cancer empowers readers to evaluate nutritional measures against cancer. There is strong evidence that multiple causes of cancer act together, not independently, to produce a case of this pernicious disease. Possibly, for example, the risk of fatal cancer ftom radiation-induced mutations may. be reduced by favorable nutritional choices and increased by unfavorable nutritional choices. [learned 2 lot about the nature of the nutritional evidence from this important book.” —Joun W. Gorwax, M.D., Pi.D., Professor Emeritus in ‘Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California at Berkeley; author of Radiation from Medical Procedures in the Pathogenesis of Cancer and Ischemic Heart Disease. “Once again Ralph Moss has provided a timely review of a topic of great importance to exncer patients and to those who hope not to become cancer patients. By avoiding hyperbole and voicing caution where caution is due, Dr. Moss’ ‘user-friendly’ book examines the pro's and con’ of antioxidants and gives both patients and their doctors an excellent primer on this complex issue.” —Roszer A. NaGoURNEY, M.D., Oncologist, Rational Therapeutics, Long Beach, California “Dr. Moss has written a timely scientific and practical review of the potential therapeutic benefits and hazards of ingesting antioxidants as part of a cancer prevention and treatment program. ‘Although more research needs to be done, especially randomized controlled trials, Iam reassured by his findings that ansoxidans, generally improve conventional cancer treatments by decreasing side effects without decreasing effectiveness. An excellent ‘evidence-based summary, easily understood by both patients and their cancer treatment specialists.” —StupHEeN M. The Power of Antioxidants “What can I do to prevent cancer?” (Of the many questions that I receive every day, this is the most frequent and most urgent. It comes from people who have had cancer andl from those who have watched friends and relatives struggle with this disease. It comes from people of every class, occupation, and age. Cancer is frightening, debilitating, and expensive. It disrupts and destroys lives, careers, whole families. No one is immune. “The good news is that because of scientific knowledge gained in the last decade, it is possible for individuals to reduce their xrisk of ‘many kinds of cancers. The key to risk reduction is dit, food supple- ments, avoidance of carcinogens, and other life style improvements. Environmental factors may cause up to 70 percent of all cancers. Even cancers caused by genetic defects can be helped by antioxidants. Another question is, “How can I prevent the side effects of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy?” Patients want to minimize the damage to their blood and bone marrow, the hair loss, mouth sores, ancl other riseries that sometimes make radiation and chemotherapy a nightmare. Tis my firm belief that antioxidants can be used by patients undergoing conventional treatments such as radiation and_ chemotherapy. ‘Antioxidants can be very helpful in reducing side effects. ‘Once patients have completed conventional therapy, is there anything they can do to speed their recovery? The answer is Yes! Antioxidants can stimulate the body's innate healing powers and restore wellness, In addition 10 improving one’s diet, one sbould stp wing tobacco and other harmful substances, increase physical activity and exercise, avoid unnecessary X rays, and maintain an optinaistic ‘mental attitude. These are all very important in preventing caracer. “The term “antioxidant” was coined in the 1920s to denote any sub- stance that fought rust, or other forms of oxidation. Oxygen-containing compounds give rise to molecules called “free radicals.” In the body, free radicals can set off little chain reactions that wreak havoe. Scientific work over the last few decades has shown that free radicals
