Real Politik is an interesting study of a Bureaucrat. The article has a moral lesson.

It tells
us that it is better to rule by love by love than by fear. A successful administrator does not
heart the feelings of his subordinates.

Mr. Hobday was the new administrator of Sir, Harold's Art Gallery. He was harsh and
sarcastic by nature. He had no taste for fine arts. But he considered himself the final
authority on every subject. He looked at every thing from commercial point of view. He
often ridiculed and insulted his subordinates. He had four subordinates, Mrs. Veronica,
Mrs. Scrutton, Mr. Tony and Major Sarson. Mrs. Veronica was his secretary. Mrs.
Scrutton's job was to display pictures for visitors. Mr. Tony's duty was to deal with public
affairs. Major Sarson's work was to make research.

One day, Hobday called a meeting of his staff. He told them that he wanted to reorganise
the gallery on the most modern and scientific lines. He wanted to make it a paying
business concern like a cinema or a theater. He told that the gallery had enough of
scholars. Now it needed some men to improve it from business point of view.

Hobday advised Tony to attract as many people to the gallery as possible. He asked him
to prepare a date of all those people who visited art galleries. Tony did not like this. It
was not his duty to prepare such lists. He scowled hard at Hobday and told that the board
had not suggested any such thing. At this Hobday got offended and started ridiculing
Tony.

After that, he turned to Mrs. Scrutton, praising her arrangement of miniature collection,
he advised her to arrange all the photographs in the same way. Mrs. Scrutton got annoyed
at this suggestion because the arrangements of photographs were not her job. She
expressed her resentment by trying to disturb Hobday. She turned her face away from
him, and started whispering to Major Sarson.

She also rustled the file papers in her lap to create noise. Now Hobday turned to Major
Sarson. He advised him to widen his knowledge of old and new art. Major Sarson felt
insulted. Hobday decided that he intended to employ some University students to look
after the affairs of the gallery in a better way. All were annoyed at his treatment and left
the hall in anger. This article beautiful draws the caricature of a patent bureaucrat.
