Grade and Section: __________

GRADE LEVEL PASSAGE RATING SHEET Prompt: Have you ever seen a greenhouse? How do gases affect the temperature? Read and find out.

The Greenhouse Effect

For 10,000 years, the Earths surface temperature remained steady at 14C with 3% carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the atmosphere. This produced greenhouse gas and water vapor. Today, greenhouse gases trap heat, keeping Earth warm with water vapor, CO 2 , methane and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). People contribute to make temperature warm. Their increased electric consumption has resulted to 25% CO 2 in atmosphere; allowing more water vapor that multiplies the increase in temperature. Scientists think that the Earth would grow warmer by 4-9% by 2050, resulting to drought that might wipe out some animal species.

Gr. VI No. of Words: 91

Questions: Literal: 1. What gases trap heat and keep the earths surface warm? Answers: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) ______

Possible - because most gases like Answers: carbon dioxide and methane occur in the atmosphere - there is an increase in burning of fuels - the use of CFCs also increased - amount of greenhouse gases in atmosphere increases - people use appliances with CO 2 5. What could be the effect of increased electric consumption to the environment? Possible - - There would be more carbon Answers: dioxide and water vapor in the atmosphere. - The Earth will be warm. Applied: 6. Scientists think that Earth will grow warmer by 2050. How can you help prevent this from happening? Possible - minimize the use of CFCs Answers: - avoid burning garbage - dispose products consumed everyday (like bottles, plastic bags) properly - use electricity wisely 7. How can you protect yourself from pollutants like carbon dioxide? Possible - plant trees Answers: - dispose water properly - maintain and repair vehicles to produce less pollutants - maintain the cleanliness of the environment
