At Heversham we operate a flat management structure with a Strategic Leadership Team consisting of Headteacher, a Senior Teacher, HLTA and School Administrator. Due to the small number of staff and a distributive leadership approach decisions regarding school improvement/development are discussed as a staff team. The Headteacher may discuss particular issues with members of the SLT /staff as appropriate.

Staff should firstly seek support/advice from their line manager as follows - teachers -Senior Teacher Mrs Jopling or Headteacher Mrs Blakeley, TAs - HLTA Mrs K Little, the MDS and cleaner - School Admin Ms Worthington. Support staff can also always seek support/advice from their class teacher as well as the HLTA and if not satisfied then the Headteacher. For SEN advice e.g. putting children forward for assessments, resources, IEPs etc. staff should firstly speak to Mrs K Little and then if necessary the Headteacher who is also the SENCo. For First Aid advice staff can see any of the following :Mrs Gorrigan, Mrs Little (also Paed), PP (also Paed), BD, MB and AMW. All staff have a duty of care for the children and therefore health and safety issues are the concern of everyone in school. The safety of the children is paramount and if any member of staff sees something that needs to be acted upon they should firstly do so themselves if possible and seek help from other members of staff if necessary. Any health and safety concerns should be taken to the Headteacher. The Designated Teacher for Child Protection is the HT, the second person is Mrs Jopling. In the absence of both all staff are to use the flow chart with all necessary numbers which is in the main school office. If there is any doubt staff are to phone the duty Social Worker for advice. At times there will be occasions where confidential discussions need to take place. All staff are reminded that meetings and discussions where confidentiality is needed this needs to be respected. There is a clear expectation that confidentiality will be adhered to. If staff have any concerns regarding staffing, children or school these should be discussed within the planned staff meetings or with the Headteacher, again if confidentiality is requested it must be adhered to. Staff need to ensure that any parental helpers in their classes are informed regarding confidentiality in school.

Absence through sickness

Please inform the Headteacher or the School Office either before 3.00 p.m. on the previous day or before 8a.m. on the morning of the absence if possible. Absence through other personal reasons - please discuss with the Head teacher.

Accidents
In the event of an accident in school, injured parties should be taken to the School Staffroom / Office. Minor injuries will be treated there and arrangements made to seek further assistance and contact parents, if appropriate. Make a record of all incidents in the Accident Book which is kept under the sink next to the office. Head bumps should have a Head Injury form completed and passed to class teacher to give child to take home. In the event of a child having to be treated by a GP or hospital doctor, an accident report sheet (P25) must be completed by the member of staff who witnessed the accident in order to send this document to the Kym Allan. (These are kept on the shelves in the school office). It should also be recorded in the School Accident Book which is under the sink next to the office. In the event of a pupil being unwell in class, report to the Admin Officer in the School Office. They will endeavour to contact parents in order for the child to be taken home. The Home book in the office should be completed. First Aid Certificate holders are Mrs Little (also Paediatric) Mrs Pearson (also Paediatric) and Mrs M Breeze (also Paediatric), Mr Greenland and Mrs Whitfield.

Admissions
Heversham St Peters C.E. Primary School Policy for Admissions
Heversham caters for children aged from 4+ to 11+ years, with an admission number of 15. Children are admitted in the academic year in which they become five. Children move from KS1 to KS2 in the September following their seventh birthday and leave to enter secondary school in the September following their eleventh birthday. The closing date for applications for September 2013 entry is 15th January 2013. We should like to think that all parents wishing to register their child with us have sympathy with the Christian ethos of the school and worship regularly at Heversham St Peters church. Admission to Reception Year At the time of considering applications for admission to the Reception class or at any other time where there are more applicants than places, children will be admitted on the basis of the following order of priorities: 1. Children Looked After e.g. in public care. (See note 1) 2. Children from within the catchment area who have brothers or sisters in the school at the time of their admission. 3. Children from within the catchment area giving priority to those who live closest to the school. Measurement will be taken from the pupils home to the nearest entrance on the school site. The route used will be the shortest walking route by road as identified at that time. 4. Children living outside the catchment area who have brothers or sisters in the school at the time of their admission. 5. Children from outside the catchment area, giving priority to those who live closest to the school. Measurement will be taken from the pupils home to the nearest entrance on the school site. The route used will be the shortest walking route by road as identified at that time. Note 1 A child looked after, i.e. in public care, is defined in the School Admissions Code as a child who is looked after by a local authority within the meaning of Section 22 of the Children Act 1989. Note 2 If it is necessary to prioritise in categories 2 or 4 priority will be given to those children with the youngest siblings. Brothers and sisters are those living at the same address and includes step and foster children.

Applications will be prioritised under the above criteria. An exception may be made if a child has a statement of Special Educational Needs and name Heversham St Peters. In these circumstances the Governing Body would have a duty to admit the child.

The Catchment Area A map of the catchment area is available from school or the Local Authority. The Right of Appeal Parents have the right to appeal against an admissions decision and should contact the school in the first instance who will then liaise with the County Councils Member Services Unit. Waiting Lists Following the allocation of places in the Reception intake the LA will, at the end of May, reallocate any places which become available as a result of parents not wishing to take up their offer.

After this the parents of any child who has been refused admission can ask at the school for their name to be placed on the waiting list. Any vacancies which arise will be allocated using the Governing Bodies Admissions Policy shown above and length of time on the waiting list will not be a factor.
Deferred Entry to Reception If a child who has not reached statutory school age has been allocated a place in Reception and their parent wishes to delay their entry the place will be help open. The place must be taken up when the child reaches statutory school age or by the start of the summer term at the latest. Advice about school admissions may be obtained from the School Admissions Team, Education Department, 5 Portland Square, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA1 1PU, telephone 01228 226894.

After School Clubs

These can vary depending on the term and time of year but we generally have a good selection of activities for children to take part including: Gymnastics Football Cooking ICT Gardening Drama Board Games Film and Toys

Assessment, Reporting and Recording

The progress of pupils is monitored throughout the year and regular contact is maintained with parents through reports and parents evenings. Any parent concerned about their childs progress is encouraged to contact the school at any time to arrange an interview with the appropriate member of staff. Assessment is mainly on a continuous basis, supported by formal SATS and teacher assessment. Writing assessments are undertaken half termly and assessed using Ros Wilson. Guided Reading is assessed termly using APP. School assessment of reading is undertaken twice a year Sept and Feb using NFER materials. Y2 onwards. Maths is assessed half termly using Heinemann from Y2 upward.

FS E profile and Development Scales, Y1 Profile or teacher assessment. Foundation subjects and science completed at end of topic. French ongoing Copies of all assessments must be put in cohort file. Copies of all Lit and Num assessments are sent to Subject leaders who collate and then pass on to Headteacher. Cohort Files are kept and contain assessment data for core and foundation subjects and kept up to date by class teachers. These files provide information for following classes/teachers and help support tracking of childrens progress through school. Parents evenings are arranged when all parents are encouraged to attend to talk to the class teacher and look through their childs work. They will usually take place in the Autumn and Spring Terms with a full Pupil Report written and handed out to parents in the Summer Term.

Behaviour
One of the major contributors to a successful school is the example of staff as role models of good communication and appropriate behaviour. The most effective way of establishing positive behaviour is through the relationship between the teacher and the pupil. It is obviously better if we as teachers can resolve the problems that arise but, if help is required, and we all of us need it at some time, and then we should ask for it early. Individuals who still cause problems should be discussed with the Head teacher. As teachers we give time to: -

1. Knowing our pupils as individuals. 2.

3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

This means knowing their personalities and interests and their friendships. Planning and organising both the classroom and the lesson to keep pupils interested and minimise the opportunity for disruption. This requires attention to such basics as being on time to start the lesson, furniture layout, groupings of pupils, matching work to pupils abilities, pacing lessons well, being enthusiastic and creating a positive classroom atmosphere. Continually observing or scanning the behaviour of the class. Being aware of and controlling, our own behaviour, including stance, tone and language. Being firm rather than aggressive, targeting the right pupil, being fair and consistent and avoiding sarcasm and idle threats. Modelling the standards of courtesy that we expect from pupils. Emphasising the positive, including praise for good behaviour, as well as good work, at every opportunity. Working with pupils to establish clear rules for classroom behaviour from the outset.

We all share the responsibility for the appropriate management of our pupils. It is through a unified and consistent approach that good standards of behaviour are established and maintained. The best approach is a positive one. We aim to take every opportunity to reward good work and behaviour. Also see Behaviour policy which is attached at the back of this document. Staff are required to keep to the professional codes of behaviour in and out of school so as not to bring school in to disrepute.

Cleaning
Mr Mark Greenland is the cleaner and works 4 hours per day Monday to Friday. Alternate weeks Mr Greenland does not come in to school on the Friday but cleans at the weekend. On these weeks staff are asked to ensure all external doors are locked and toilets flushed. If there are any problems regarding cleaning please report to the School Administrator. During the holiday periods classrooms and areas are usually deep cleaned. It is expected that teachers will clear surfaces to ease this procedure

Collection of Money
Any money that is handed in e.g. dinner money, money for trips, photographs etc. should be sent to the school office.

Communication
Please see policy

Communication with parents

A newsletter is sent home every Friday to inform parents for the following week of any events, important dates etc. We operate an open door policy and parents are welcome and encouraged to come into school to discuss any issues after school rather than before school due to time constraints. If more time is required then they are asked to make an appointment with the class teacher. If parents wish to see the Headteacher they are asked to phone the school office to make an appointment. Before letters are sent home they should be seen by the Headteacher (in absence then senior teacher), when agreed then a copy should be sent/given in to the office to put on file. Staff are strongly advised not to give out personal emails to parents or children. Staff are also strongly advised not post anything that could cause embarrassment to themselves or school on social networking sites. Please see Internet Policy.

Displays
We endeavour to create a stimulating learning environment. Good quality displays play an important part in this. The emphasis is on presenting childrens work either finished or on working walls. Where ever possible/appropriate work should be well mounted and named. A variety of displays is encouraged whether interactive, 3D, artefacts, table top etc. Themes are sometimes agreed for whole school contribution and boards are divided up through agreement by the staff. A celebration board is at the front of school and this aims to celebrate achievements of children and the school. The quality of display is important and work displayed needs to be well mounted with clear labelling and naming as appropriate. Corridor displays need to be changed half termly class display need to be kept up to date and relevant to the topics in process. An emphasis should be on childrens work and not teacher displays.

Duties
Parents are requested to have children in the school playground by 8.50am to line up with teaching staff present. The children should then enter school in a quiet and orderly fashion. Staff are expected to monitor cloakrooms at these busy times.

Playground duties as displayed on the staff notice board. All staff must ensure their duties are covered if absent due to CPD courses. Staff on duty must be in the playground promptly and will need to arrange for someone to make/take them a drink. If staff are not able to be in the yard promptly they should arrange another member of staff to take their place. Lunchtimes class teachers are asked to supervise the first 10 mins of lunch times in the hall. This entails settling the children and taking Grace. This is done on a rota basis Monday - Cl 1 Tuesday Cl2 Wednesday CL3 Thursday - Cl 4 Friday - Cl 2 At the end of lunchtime the member of staff on the relevant day (same as above) will ring the bell at 12.55. Children will be asked to put equipment away and line up a class at a time. Other teachers are asked to be promptly in the yard for 1p.m. to see their classes back into school.

Health and Safety

Staff are asked to familiarise themselves with the poster in the school office.
Staff members copy of the summary of the statement of policy.

The governors attach great importance to the health, safety and welfare of all employees, pupils and
members of the public whilst on school grounds and/or using school facilities.

The arrangement of the safe and healthy conduct of work is a management responsibility, as is the
adequate funding of health and safety items.

It is the duty of every employee to exercise a personal responsibility to him/her self and to others, and to
co-operate fully with arrangements made for health and safety. This includes ensuring that ingress and egress from their classrooms and exit doors are clear, unimpeded and safe.

Risk assessments of all areas of school will be carried out on a regular basis. All complaints, hazards,
accidents and dangerous occurrences will be investigated.

The full information regarding the policy for health and safety at Heversham School is contained in the
Health and Safety Policy. A copy of this document is kept in the Policy Document file in the office.

The governors require all staff to sign for and read health and safety documentation.

This work includes: Work tasks may be set for the weekend for the child to complete either by themselves or with help from their parents. Tables, spellings and mental arithmetic are set as a teacher deems appropriate and school reading books are taken home on a daily basis. If children are absent from school due to holiday or illness the governors advise that teachers are not required to set work for during the absence.

HPSA

We are very fortunate to have a very active parents association who regularly arrange fund raisers for school. The money raised goes towards resources that will benefit all children in school e.g. ict equipment. If you have any suggestions for either fund raising activities or what the money could be spent on please talk to Mrs Sarah Woodhams the current Chair, or Headteacher

Illness
There is a poster regarding illness and expected absences and actions in the school office. All staff are required to read and follow the advice. Parents are asked to keep their children off school for a clear 48hrs after sickness or/and diarrhoea. If a child becomes ill in school and the class teacher is concerned the Headteacher should be informed and a decision will be taken as to whether the parents will be informed and asked to collect their child. Ms Worthington also needs to be informed in order to keep accurate records of who is in school. In absence of the Headteacher then a Senior Teacher should be consulted. Children going home are usually asked to collect their bags and coats and asked to sit and wait by the front door where they can be monitored by Ms Worthington until collected.

INSET, Courses or Meetings

Staff Development INSET is used to support the development of the school, balancing the needs of whole school issues, departments and individual staff. Each member of staff is responsible for their development and this will be supported by the Performance Management review process with the Head teacher. Records of staff involvement in in-service training are held in the office and individual staff members give verbal feedback from any INSET attended as soon as is practicable during a staff meting. There is also a course review form to be completed and handed in/sent to the Headteacher. This is to enable effective monitoring of CPD and its impact on school improvement. For school INSET there is an expectation that all staff will be available for the September INSET day(s). Holidays must not be booked that overlap with the start of school terms if they clash with contracted hours/days. All teachers need to ensure that they are available to attend INSET activities. Support staff are expected to attend pro rata but also any that is relevant to the age groups/subjects they support in order to keep up to date with current practice. Meetings Staff meetings are held on Tuesday evenings from 3.30 - 4.30 p.m. All staff are asked to keep this evening free. The meetings will take the form of Housekeeping where general update information is discussed including diary date, upcoming event etc. All staff are welcome to attend. Any staff who do not attend have the responsibility of gaining the information either from colleagues, who did attend, or from the minutes that are available in the staff meeting file in the school office. Staff meetings will also take the form of PDMs where staff will update colleagues of information gained on a course or a subject leader delivering staff training as agreed. There is an expectation that support staff will attend any meetings that may have particular relevance to their work and at the beginning of new academic year and new terms. As with other meetings in school there will be occasions where confidential discussions need to take place. All staff are reminded that meetings and discussions where confidentiality is needed this needs to be respected. There is a clear expectation that confidentiality will be adhered to.

Job Descriptions

All members of staff have job descriptions which will have been discussed on appointment with the Headteacher. Roles in schools may change from time to time depending on the school development priorities. Any revision of job descriptions will be made through discussions with the member of staff and will be drawn up with regard with LA agreed guidelines. Any queries regarding job descriptions should be discussed with the Headteacher

Keys
Members of the teaching staff have door keys for school. Keys for stockrooms, PE, paper store, cleaners cupboard and areas around school are available from the office and MUST be returned. Ms Worthington and Headteacher hold keys to the school office, Heads office and safe.

Leave of Absence
Any member of staff wanting leave of absence should discuss this with the Headteacher.

Medicines
As a general rule, any child who needs prescribed medicine should be kept at home until they are well enough to return to school. If a child is continuing with a course of medication e.g. antibiotics, Parents need to discuss this with the Headteacher. Staff are allowed to administer medication on a voluntary basis, Mrs Blakeley and Karen Little being willing to give medicines. The Headteacher must be notified and a Medicine sheet must be completed and witnessed. These are in the file labelled Medical on the shelf in the school office. Children who require inhalers need to bring in their own, clearly labelled and the must be able to self administer.

Telephone/Messages
Telephone messages for all members of staff will be noted on a message pad. Staff will be informed as soon as possible and the note put into their piggy hole. Staff may not use mobile phones during lesson time, break times or in sight of pupils. Staff who wish to use at lunchtime can do so but not in front of children. If staff need to be contacted or need to be contacted this should be done through the school office .

Office
Ms Debra Worthington is the School Adminstrator, if you have any queries regarding e.g.lunchtime MDS, registers, paper work, forms (including supply forms), payroll, school trips, transport, diary dates, courses, cleaning etc then Ms Worthington will be pleased to help. Ms Worthington is also Clerk to the Governors.

Orders
Please obtain school order forms from Ms Worthington. When completed they should be returned to the school office for processing. Please be aware that your order may not be processed the same day/week and you should try to do bulk orders where necessary. If something is required urgently please discuss with Ms Worthington. All orders will need to be authorised by the Headteacher prior to processing. Please note that if the correct form is not used then orders cannot be processed.

Parent Helpers
Parents are welcome to come and help in school. We have regular band of helpers who have been CRB checked, it is important that teachers check with the office. Teachers are asked to give parents a copy of the Information for Parent Helpers booklet and ask them to see Ms Worthington who will arrange an appointment

for them to meet with Mrs Blakeley prior to helping in school. This interview is required as part of Safer Recruitment processes.

Parking
There is limited parking on the lane outside school. This is not parking just for teachers but is also residents parking. We request that supply teachers and parents do not fill these spaces but park on the main road, Parking in the Athenaenum car park is not allowed, however parents are allowed to drop off children in the mornings as long as they have vacated the car park by 9 .15 a.m. Afternoon pick ups are also expected to be as brief as possible.

Performance Management
Teachers - Please see policy. The process is currently under review for Support staff .

Planning
This is a required part of the teachers work in school. All planning should be relevant, appropriate and available. There should be clear differentiation for year groups and ability, learning objectives and success criteria. SEN and ICT provision should also be clear. It is important that teachers keep accurate records and planning files and make them available on request.

Termly/half termly planning should be handed in/emailed to the Headteacher on the Monday following the first week back into school. Weekly planning should be annotated and handed in on the Monday of the following week. Planning can be emailed to the school office using the admin address.

For further information please see Teaching and Learning policy

Policies
The school has a number of policies that outline the way we work as a school. A file of all the policies will be in every classroom. All staff are expected to read and follow these policies. All policies will be reviewed on a cycle to ensure that they are up to date and relevant. All staff will be involved in reviews of school based documents. Some of the policies are issued by the LA adopted by the governors. These policies are also includes in the file and are reviewed as directed by the LA. Health and Safety Policy the governors require that all staff sign for and read these policies.

Registration is from 9 9.10a.m. when registers will be collected by Class 4 pupils and returned to the office. Any children who arrive later than 9.10 should report to the office where dinners can also be checked. Registers remain open until 9.30a.m. therefore any unknown absences should be left blank. Any known absences where the office has been notified will be passed on to the class teacher who can enter the appropriate mark. Any un-notified absence will be followed up by Ms Worthington at 9.30a.m. Afternoon sessions are registered from 1 -1.10p.m. Children who need to leave during a session should have a letter from their parents/the office notified by parents. Ms Worthington needs to be aware of these absences in order to keep the Out of school register up to date. On occasions parents may request to arrive later. These requests must be referred to the Head teacher who will discuss the reasons with the parents.

Reprographic equipment
The photocopier is situated in the main corridor. It has the facility for colour copying however staff are encouraged to use as few photocopies as possible in order to keep costs down. If any problems occur staff are asked to try and resolve following the guidance on the copier screen. For more serious problems with the copier that require an engineer must be reported to Ms Worthington as soon as possible.

School Dinner Staff

Where ever possible we aim to ensure that lunchtimes are appropriately covered with at least 3 dinner staff. As we are a small school and with the difficulties in recruitment for staff teaching and support staff are sometimes asked to help out. Our dinner staff are mainly recruited from our parents and we are grateful for their support. Ms Worthington is responsible for lunchtime rotas and she MUST be notified of any changes or requests. Our parent dinner ladies are now contracted and listed below. All our dinner staff are CRB checked and are made aware of First Aid requirements. Meetings are held approximately once a term to discuss any issues. These meetings are arranged and led by Ms Worthington.

School Meals
We currently import our cooked school dinners from Dallam School. We aim to keep school meals but need to keep numbers around 25 daily. This is monitored termly and provision is reviewed annually by the Headteacher and Governors. In order to encourage children to take school meals lunchtime arrangements have been reviewed. There are 2 sittings with Classes 1 & 2 first sitting (at 12noon) and class 3 on second sitting (around 12.30p.m.). Children can sit with friends regardless of them having packed lunches or school dinners. Children on school dinners are also allowed to bring in packed lunch boxes with drinks and fruit. (No fizzy drinks or chocolate bars are allowed). All children should be encouraged to make healthy choices and finish their meal. Drinks are also important. The cook is called Bev and she is employed by Dallam. In order that she can efficiently deliver the school dinners please ensure that the kitchen is left tidy with surfaces left clean and uncluttered. Any utensils and cloths must be returned to the kitchen.

The school and grounds are non smoking.

Special Needs
We aim to have an inclusive approach to children with specific needs. Support is in various forms whether through differentiation, extra time or adult help. Some children may require an individual plan, IEP. Copies of these and further information and advice can be obtained from Mrs Little. Mrs Little supports teachers in setting targets for SEN children and in the planning and delivery of programmes of work. We have a variety of educational resources available in school, some are in classroom but most are kept in the Blue Room or can be obtained through Mrs Little. If a pupil is found to have learning difficulties, then we refer to the Code of Practice and act accordingly. Pupils with more severe learning difficulties may be referred to the Educational Psychologist and other outside agencies. Such arrangements are made by the SENCO / Head teacher.

Problem Occurs:

Class teacher informs SENCO, Head teacher, parents Learning Difficulties? Subject Related? Personality? Behaviour? Add to SEN Register Write Individual Education Plan (In consultation with Educational Practitioner and pass to SENCo) Review IEP each term/half term (as appropriate) If Special Educational Needs cannot be met through IEP then refer to Cumbria Education Service to start procedure for Statutory Assessment.
