The Nuclear Bombings of Japan

When Two Bombs Changed It All

Clay Graubard Senior Division Individual Website

I chose my topic due to my fascination with decisions that were made in warfare that had lasting effects on mankind. I have always been interested in revolutionary warfare tactics, and warfare that changed the way that warfare would be for years and years after. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki fascinated me when I was younger, so when I saw what the history topic was, I was eager to do this topic. Something about the power of the nuclear bomb always interested me due to the pure power and responsibility that comes with the nuclear bomb. I conducted my research by first finding some secondary resources so I could have a basis for my general topic. Once I created that base foundation if information, I started to look for resources that would be useful to my topic and that would help to show all of the effects that the bombing, precautions and amount of planning that went into the bombings of Japan. Luckily, I a large source that contained many primary source documents from the government about the bombing that used to be classified as well as a fantastic source from the CIA. After that, I just continued to look for sources about the aftereffects and other sources to tie it all together. I chose to make a website for History Day for a few reasons. The first one is that I was working alone, and I thought that this would be a more effective way to do my project. It would be easier for me to access my project on the go as well, so I could work on it at school and other places when I needed to. More importantly, I really like technology and computers so I thought that by making a website I would be more interested in completing my project. I setup my website so that the information would be organized so that it would have a good flow and be easy to read. It has a nice progression of information that goes through all sides of the nuclear bombings and I used multiple styles of media due to it being easy to implement different types of media because it is a website.

My topic fits into the History Day theme because the use of nuclear warfare was a major turning point in warfare in general. It launched a new era of warfare and changed the world forever. It changed the way that warfare is performed there and added more risks to warfare now between countries who have nuclear weapons. It also changed political relationships and created more danger in some aspects. Lastly, we still see many impacts of this bombing, directly and indirectly in our world today.
