INTRODUCCION
Propsito del Proyecto EXCI Como parte de los programas y proyectos de apoyo a la Visin 2006 de la UANL, donde se contempla que el egresado universitario sea competitivo en un segundo idioma, surge la iniciativa de disear un examen institucional de ingls. El propsito de este instrumento es el de conocer, evaluar y certificar la competencia en el idioma ingls de los egresados de las distintas facultades de la Universidad. Adicionalmente, se pretende fomentar en el estudiante universitario la inquietud de aprender un segundo idioma, para lo cual la Universidad ofrece los recursos y la infraestructura disponibles en cada uno de los Centros de Auto-Aprendizaje de Idiomas (CAADI) de las distintas dependencias y del Centro de Idiomas de la Facultad de Filosofa y Letras. Antecedentes La Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo Len, a travs de la Secretara Acadmica y en coordinacin con El Consejo Britnico, da inicio al proyecto en octubre de 1997. En esta primera fase se analizan los aspectos generales concernientes al nivel deseado (400 horas de instruccin en el idioma ingls) y al diseo del examen, as como las necesidades de tipo administrativo inherentes a la aplicacin del mismo. En noviembre del mismo ao se celebra la ceremonia para la firma del convenio entre la Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo Len y El Consejo Britnico. Por medio de este convenio las dos instituciones acuerdan trabajar en conjunto para iniciar el diseo del examen. En Enero de 1998 se termina el diseo de la primera versin del examen, y se ponen a prueba las diferentes secciones del mismo entre una muestra representativa del nivel deseado, con la participacin de alumnos de distintos CAADI y del Centro de Idiomas de la Facultad de Filosofa y Letras. Con la capacitacin de un experto en evaluaciones de El Consejo Britnico, se integra el equipo de evaluadores de la seccin de redaccin del EXCI. En marzo de 1998 se aplica en 15 diferentes facultades el primer examen de prueba a una muestra de 250 alumnos, los cuales representan aproximadamente el 10% de la poblacin estimada por semestre. Para la evaluacin de las primeras tres secciones del examen se cont con el apoyo tcnico del Centro de Evaluaciones de la UANL. La seccin de redaccin fue revisada por el equipo de evaluadores. En abril de 1998 se edita el examen de prctica para su distribucin en todas las facultades. Asimismo, se integra una segunda versin del EXCI y se prepara la siguiente aplicacin del mismo en escala real. Esta segunda aplicacin del EXCI se lleva cabo en junio con un total de 1500 alumnos examinados. En esta ocasin participaron todas las facultades de la UANL, el Centro de Evaluaciones y el equipo de evaluadores de la UANL. Un total de 427 alumnos demostraron su competencia en el idioma ingls y obtuvieron un certificado por parte de la UANL y El Consejo Britnico. Con el propsito de valorar la habilidad de expresin oral de una muestra de 22 alumnos de distintas facultades que aprobaron el EXCI, se llev a cabo un examen oral en septiembre de 1998. Los resultados de este examen revelaron que los alumnos tienen la capacidad de hablar el ingls de una manera competente y aceptable. Continuando con la colaboracin de El Consejo Britnico se disea una tercera versin del EXCI y se inicia el registro para la tercera aplicacin, que tiene efecto en octubre de 1998, con la participacin voluntaria de 450 alumnos.

GENERALIDADES
Tipo de instrumento El Examen de Competencia en Ingls (EXCI) es un instrumento que mide la habilidad del estudiante para comunicarse de manera competente en ingls, teniendo como enfoque el aspecto funcional del lenguaje. Evala el idioma empleado en diferentes contextos y situaciones de la vida real, prctica y laboral. El tipo de reactivos y el formato del examen han sido diseados con el propsito de demostrar estas habilidades Quin puede tomarlo El EXCI exige un nivel mnimo de 400 horas de instruccin en el idioma ingls. Todo alumno universitario perteneciente a cualquier facultad y que cumpla con el mnimo de horas requeridas es candidato a tomar el examen. Cundo y dnde registrarse La UANL, a travs de la Coordinacin del Examen de Ingls, publica en todas las facultades las fechas de registro y aplicacin del examen. El registro se lleva a cabo en los Centros de Auto-Aprendizaje de Idiomas (CAADI).

Procedimiento de Aplicacin El Centro de Evaluaciones es responsable de la impresin y la distribucin del nmero de exmenes requerido por cada facultad. La aplicacin del examen se realiza de forma simultnea en todas las facultades. Un supervisor del Centro de Evaluaciones est presente durante la aplicacin del examen y recolecta los exmenes contestados para su revisin en el Centro de Evaluaciones. Evaluacin La evaluacin de las tres primeras secciones se lleva a cabo en el Centro de Evaluaciones por medio de un lector ptico electrnico. Posteriormente los exmenes son turnados a la Coordinacin del EXCI, en donde tiene efecto la evaluacin de la seccin de redaccin. El equipo de evaluadores de la Coordinacin del EXCI lleva a cabo la revisin de esta seccin. En la siguiente etapa se integran los resultados de las cuatro secciones para obtener los promedios finales por facultad. Los resultados se envan a cada facultad. Finalmente, a los alumnos aprobados se les da aviso de la fecha de entrega de los certificados correspondientes. Fechas de Aplicacin El examen se aplica dos veces al ao: febrero y septiembre.

ESPECIFICACIONES
Nivel El examen est diseado para evaluar el nivel de competencia en ingls deseado en el egresado universitario. Evala las habilidades en lectura, redaccin y comprensin oral, as como los conocimientos en gramtica y vocabulario. Contenido Por ser un examen de competencia general, el EXCI se aplica a los alumnos de todas las carreras, ya que no incluye lenguaje tcnico o especializado. Se compone de dos documentos; el primero contiene las Secciones de Comprensin Oral (Listening), Lectura (Reading), Grmatica y Vocabulario (Grammar & Vocabulary), y est constitudo por un total de 50 reactivos de opcin mltiple; el segundo contiene la Seccin de Redaccin (Writing). Duracin del examen y tiempos estimados La duracin del examen es de dos horas. El examen inicia con la seccin de Listening y tiene un lmite de tiempo establecido de 20 minutos. Las secciones restantes pueden ser contestadas en el orden deseado. La cuarta seccin contiene lneas para que el estudiante conteste en ellas. Preparacin para el examen Este examen exige una preparacin de por lo menos 400 horas de estudio del ingls. Para ello, los alumnos de nuestra Universidad cuentan con la infraestructura proporcionada por los Centros de Auto-Aprendizaje de Idiomas (CAADI) de cada Facultad y el Centro de Idiomas de la Facultad de Filosofa y Letras, en donde pueden adquirir y desarrollar las habilidades que evala el EXCI.

Seccin 1 Comprensin oral (Listening) Objetivo especfico El candidato deber ser capaz de comprender el ingls hablado mediante la identificacin de piezas clave de informacin, descartando datos innecesarios o complementarios y haciendo inferencias de acuerdo con lo escuchado.

Descripcin En esta seccin el candidato escuchar dos textos y contestar una serie de preguntas que pueden ser de opcin mltiple o de tipo falso/verdadero. En las grabaciones

podrn escucharse las voces de personas de habla inglesa en conversaciones diversas, expresando opiniones, en transmisiones de la radio, u operadoras telefnicas proporcionando informacin. Los hablantes pueden tener acento norteamericano estndar o britnico, ya que en los materiales que existen en los CAADI se manejan ambos acentos. Sin embargo, en lo posible se dar preferencia al acento norteamericano dado que existe una mayor exposicin del estudiante a este acento. Los textos tocarn diversos temas, pero no requerirn de conocimientos especializados; podrn incluir instrucciones, descripciones o narrativa. Las tareas requieren que el candidato recuerde secciones especficas de informacin, haga inferencias o transfiera informacin a tablas o diagramas. Los dos textos son contrastantes en cuanto a tema y tipo, aunque son similares en duracin (mximo 3 minutos), y podrn ser escuchados dos veces. Cada texto viene acompaado de 4 a 6 preguntas, ya que el nmero total de reactivos correspondientes a esta seccin es de 10.

Primera parte El material auditivo seleccionado para la primera parte de esta seccin del examen de prctica consiste en una conversacin entre dos personas que acaban de salir del cine de ver una pelcula, y estn comentando sus impresiones sobre la misma. Durante la conversacin podrn estar de acuerdo o en desacuerdo en algunos puntos. De esta forma, las preguntas escritas basadas en la conversacin se han diseado para evaluar la comprensin del lenguaje utilizado para expresar acuerdo o desacuerdo, disculpas o quejas, etctera, as como la comprensin de la idea central de la conversacin. Las preguntas en este caso son de tipo falso/verdadero. A continuacin se muestra un ejemplo del tipo de reactivos para esta parte.

But not all the disasters of 1996 were man-made. In Iceland, a volcano erupted beneath the largest glacier in Europe, melting the ice cap and causing enormous floods. A thousand kilometers of land were flooded and roads and bridges washed away. Scientists prevented any

loss of life by predicting the scale of the flooding.. But they did less well when it came to the study of other planets. 1996 was the year when scientists went to war over Mars. Seccin 2 Lectura (Reading)

Objetivo especfico El candidato ser capaz de leer pasajes cortos en ingls, identificar los puntos principales y complementarios, extraer la informacin relevante en detalle y deducir la actitud o la intencin del autor. Descripcin En esta seccin los alumnos debern leer 3 textos pequeos de temas diferentes, extrados de peridicos, revistas o material promocional como folletos y anuncios, demostrando que comprenden el contenido y que adems entienden la estructura del idioma utilizado para expresar nociones de tiempo, espacio, posesin, etctera. La extensin mxima de cada uno de los textos es de 350 palabras. Debern buscar informacin dentro de un texto, descartando el material que sea irrelevante o redundante. Los textos podrn ser imaginarios o reales, con el fin de que el candidato distinga el sentido central de los mismos y determine la actitud del autor hacia el material y el efecto que pretende en el lector. Los reactivos de esta seccin evalan la comprensin detallada de la lectura, as como la capacidad para inferir, parafrasear o resumir. El nmero de reactivos es de 4 a 8 para cada texto, formando un total de 15 reactivos. Descripcin Los alumnos debern demostrar habilidad para dar informacin, describir eventos y personas, lugares y objetos, as como transmitir reacciones a situaciones, expresar diversas emociones, etctera. Adems, usarn apropiadamente las palabras en diferentes contextos escritos y ser capaces de producir variaciones en oraciones simples. Esta seccin incluye tres partes. Primera y segunda partes En estas dos partes se evala la exactitud para redactar a nivel de enunciados. Este tipo de reactivos requieren que el estudiante transforme o complete 10 oraciones dadas de acuerdo a ciertos patrones.
