Esteban E.

Torres High School is a new high School on a beautiful campus located near the Cesar Chavez exit of the 710 Freeway in East Los Angeles.

5 SEPARATE ACADEMIES:
ELAPAA, Social Justice Humanitas Science & Engineering Renaissance academies.

The mascot of Torres High School is the Toro (bull), so several students like to wear baseball caps featuring the Chicago Bulls of basketball fame.

CURRICULUM
ELAPAA is dedicated to the Performing Arts. Singing Dancing Theater (many students are able to take dance classes which enable
students to obtain physical education credit as well as get to develop and practice dance skills).

Social Justice is dedicated to social justice and leadership

CURRICULUM
ELAPAA offers abundant courses in the subjects related Performing Arts, and students are required to take classes in all 3 domains of the performing arts. Each performing art (theater, choir, band, dance) perform throughout the year. SJLA even offers a Pre-law program for students who are interested in pursuing a career in law. Also, SJLA students takes regular history classes which have been augmented with extra emphasis on the vital roles played by the labor movements and unions which help blue collar workers gain decent wages and more respect.

THE CITY OF EAST LOS ANGELES

Cheech and Chong helped to publicize this area of Southern California.

The high school is named after Congressman Esteban E. Torres, a pacesetter, leader, lawmaker and a champion of social justice.

THE MISSION
The mission of the East Los Angeles Performing Arts Academy is to develop creative, contributing members of society through a standards-based curriculum featuring rigorous interdisciplinary instruction that is rich in the performing arts.

East Los Angeles is also referred to by much of the community as the Eastside, which is east of Downtown Los Angeles and west of the San Gabriel Valley. There is a very high concentration of Hispanic residents, primarily of Mexican descent.

GANG CULTURE
Gangs have been in the community since the original White Fence gang in 1911. The Maravilla projects have their own cliques/gangs such as Ford Maravilla, Mariana Maravilla, and Lopez Maravilla. Other gangs in the area include Hazards and VNE (which is shared territory with Boyle Heights)

Its Garfield High School was features in the 1988 movie Stand and Deliver.

Most of Esteban E. Torres students came from Garfield & Roosevelt High School, many of whom had disciplinary problems and low academic achievement.

ELAPAA started with a 9-11 grade student body the first year and its first Graduating Class of 2012 was special because many of the students, by being in the school site council, hired many of the teachers and our principal that is with them today

ACADEMIC OUTCOMES
ELAPAA graduated over 90% of the senior class with close to 30% of the seniors being accepted into a Cal state or UC. ELAPAA scored a 579 on the Academic Performance Index (API) Social Justice scored a 570 on the API

Students with IEPs are supported in the regular classroom by Resource Specialist teachers in math and English. There are 2 certified Special Education teachers and 3 Special Education Aides for the 20 Special Education students just at ELAPAA. Most students IEPs indicate 100 minutes of support per week. Teachers co-teach, collaborate (in planning) instruction, or provide individual or small group instruction as necessary to provide modifications and adaptations. Regular education teachers participate in developing I.E.P.s.

ELAPAA has been fortunate to have partnered up with L.A. Opera in bringing opera to the East side, and having our students perform in an opera.

TEACHING
