What a terrific class not only for these three young men but for all students. I'm sure that people were maneuvering to get their children in the class. Exp. Record #: 10915 Date submitted: 06/20/2012 Elizabeth Hogan approved on 06/21/2012 Cohort: UEN 2011

Field-Based Internship Reflection Form For Internship Experience Standard 1: Visionary Leadership; Standard 2: Instructional Leadership; Standard 3: Organizational Leadership; Standard 4: Collaborative Leadership; Standard 5: Ethical Leadership; Standard 6: Political Leadership Standard and Criteria 2.c Encourages design of more effective learning experiences for students Level Special Education Time Spent 5 hour(s) Note

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was general education teacher, in this case for one section of the elective: Forensic Science. Forensics was the most sought after class by 8th graders at Carver Middle School. Parents would come to the school in person to try to get their child into one of the four quarterly sections of the class. It was a hands-on class with 2-3 lab activities a week. It was the buzz of the school. Special education students did not get into forensics that often because it was during their intense reading or math supplemental class time. The students that really never were given an opportunity to get into a section of forensics were the Level 3 Behavioral Disorder Special needs students. I coached a few of the young men during the 8th grade winter boys basketball season. A very positive rapport, relationship, and respect was built during this time. I advocated for these few students to have the opportunity to be enrolled in a section of Forensics. With my connections and professional rapport with the guidance counselor we made it happen. The boys absolutely loved the class and more importantly we saw some of the behaviors that got them into Level 3 diminish. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned the importance of first impressions, building a relationship, creating positive rapport, and being genuine. No one ever told me that there would be a couple of Level 3 BD students on the basketball team. By coaching these young men it helped us develop a mutual respect and positive teacher-student relationship. I can apply this learning and experience to when I become principal and "take over" a building. I am sure there are going to be teachers who may have hated the previous principal or do not get a long with the other teachers. I will be very cognizant of my first impressions and how I interact with all the teachers during the first couple of weeks. If I can build a relationship wit them quickly and positively it will help everyone out in the long run. Mentor(s) The date approved by his/her lead mentor: 06/20/2012
