Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was 8th grade social studies teacher. My principal (mentor) gave all the teachers a Marzano book to read for an all-staff book study over the course of the 2011-2012 school year. During our weekly Wednesday professional development days we would occasionally bring the book and go through it as a staff with the principal. He wanted us to come up with professional growth plans with the help of the book. Marzano had a list of about 20 things a school could do to create a better climate and raise test scores. The one that I wanted to focus on was building meaningful relationships with the students. Once the relationships were built, I as a teacher would be able to reach new levels of teaching and learning with the students. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). A book study for already busy teachers is a dicey decision by a principal. If the principal can respect the teachers time and make it meaningful, the teachers will actually engage their selves in it. My principal did just this, he said up front and acknowledged that he knew how busy we were, and that this was just to supplement our careers and help us grow. He said that he would give us plenty of heads up as what to read and be ready to discuss. I know a lot of teachers would just read it the day of the discussion, he never "assigned" more than one chapter to discuss. I will takeaway from this experience that as a leader you can get your teachers to do extra stuff, just make it worth their time and above all RESPECT their time.
