Excellent experience and reflection. I was particularly interested in how Carver planned for the visits. What a great idea and so welcoming to the incoming students. Exp. Record #: 10830 Date submitted: 05/23/2012 Elizabeth Hogan approved on 05/24/2012 Cohort: UEN 2011

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). The local elementary schools visited Carver middle school for 6th grade orientation. There were three different elementary schools visiting on three different days. The 5th graders toured the whole school and met teachers, staff, and administrators. This was a planned event that took quite of bit of time to organize and run. There were highlight classrooms that the incoming students visited along with visiting with the highlight teachers. I helped pick the highlight teachers and was chosen as a highlight teacher. I met with the students and talked with them briefly about the high expectations they were going to expected to meet. The purpose of the chat was also to show that the teachers were friendly even while holding their students to high expectations. My role was to simply help plan and run the three-day event along with meeting with the students. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned that it takes a lot of planning to run an event like the orientation. "Many hands makes light work.." is something that I have picked up. Events like these are always going happen and need to be planned correctly. What I noticed is that adults, just like the students, need patience and time in order to help pull off an event like this. The teachers are all different individuals and have different personalities. I noted the strengths of each teacher and used them in areas that they were comfortable with and strong in. It happened to be that the Art teacher was really good and more than willing to create decorations and put them up around the building for the event. The "Home Ec" teacher was also strong in the area of baking, they were more than willing to bake cookies for the incoming students. I will use this experience as a lesson learned on utilizing the strength areas of the staff. After all the principal and the teacher have some similarities in their roles in terms of guiding their in-subordinates. The teacher sees and uses the strengths of each student and the principal does the same with his/her staff. Mentor(s) Brad Schweppe The date approved by his/her lead mentor: 05/22/2012
