COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP ED 468: INTRODUCTORY SUPERVISED TEACHING

Candidate: Irene Navarro Content Area: Physical Science Subject Matter: Science Lesson Content Description: All students will learn the states of matter. Date: 3/25/13 (MONDAY) Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Type of Lesson: Direct Instruction: Cooperative Learning: Inquiry Direct Instruction Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction *Note: This is a lesson that takes 3 days to complete. This is also the same lesson I taught Monday-Wednesday, except I will be teaching this lesson again to another class, since my Master Teacher teaches science to both her class and her co-teachers class. This lesson will be part 3 of this science lesson. Content Standard:

PHYSICALSCIENCE1e.Studentsknowmatterhasthreeforms:solid,liquid, andgas.
ELD Standard: Early Intermediate EL Comprehension Standard
Restate and execute multiple-step oral directions.

Lesson Objective: All students will make a model of molecules of the state of matter using Fruit Loops and list examples for each state (gas, liquid, and solid). Assessment: Formative: -White Board Slates -Discussions (Group & Partner Opportunities) -The kinesthetic movement they select as I call out a specific state of matter Summative: -Final product of how they glued the Fruit Loops to represent the molecules -Final product on the examples they gave for each state of matter Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs -ELL: Visual Examples, Seated Next to Bilingual Student, Going Over Vocabulary Prior to Lesson, Realia -ADHD: Visual Examples, Seated at the Front of the Class, Asked to be the Materials Manager for class (so he can have a chance to get up and move), Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be utilizing in your lesson If no technology is used, please explain why. You Tube (Video on Matter), Power Point, Document Camera

March 30, 2012 INTO Anticipatory Set/Orientation State Objective of Lesson Show Picture File of Different Objects (use examples for each state of matter) Go over matter with students Hook them with a video on matter from You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btGu9FWSPtc). State technology that will be used: You Tube, PowerPoint, Document Camera Re-state Content Standard and Objective in student friendly terminology: At the end of the lesson, you will know the three different kinds of state of matter and give examples for each. THROUGH
Modeling/Presentation Go over each state of matter through Power Point presentation Go over states of matter using kinesthetic movement to demonstrate molecules in state of matter Guided/Structured Practice Read as a class the text on the states of matter Why Does Matter Matter? Ask comprehension questions throughout the text and read the text in chunks Guide class in giving examples for each state of matter Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment Draw molecules of state of matter on the document camera and have class guess what state of matter you drew Have class give you examples on their white board slates or group/partner discussions State technology that will be used: PowerPoint, Document Camera Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students Stated in the cover page under Adaptations for El and Special Need Students

BEYOND
Independent Practice/Summative Assessment/Closure Each child will be given a bag of Fruit Loops and a large sheet of construction paper Model each step of this project one by one. Have class do written stuff first before giving them the Fruit Loops to glue on their poster. Instruct students to use Fruit Loops to model how the molecules look like in each state of matter Have each child write a definition for each state of matter and give three examples for each Have class share the examples they came up with on their worksheet Have students check their poster based on the rubric they will be graded on Have students reflect on the lesson through a written reflection on the rubric Close lesson by reviewing main points and doing a kinesthetic activity (I call out a state of matter and they represent the molecule with their hands, this could also be modified by calling out objects and they represent the molecule with their hands) Ex: I say book, so they close their fists tightly together (more challenging) Ex: I say gas, so they wave their hands freely in the air State technology that will be used: Document Camera to display worksheet Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students Stated in the cover page under Adaptations for El and Special Need Students
