SITE LOCATION
UNDERSTANDING THE SLUM: RESIDENTS OF THE SLUM ARE PREDOMINANTLY HINDUS. AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD INCOME :RS.9000 PER MONTH DWELLING UNITS ARE SINGLE STORY HUTS WITH BRICK WALLS AND ASBESTOS ROOF. DESPITE THE HIGH DENSITY, THE OPEN, OVERFLOWING SEWERS, AND DYSFUNCTIONAL PUBLIC TOILETS (MOST HOMES DO NOT HAVE TOILETS), INDRAMMANAGAR SLUM RESIDENTS MAINTAIN CLEAN HOMES AND HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY THE SLUM IS WELL CONNECTED TO THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
THE DESIGN IS FAIRY MODULAR AT SITE, CLUSTER AND UNIT LEVELS.PHASE WISE STRIP DEVELOPMENT IS FEASIBLE. THE AERIAL CONNECTIVITY OR THE TWO LEVEL STREET DESIGN.THE CONCEPT OF "EYES ON THE STREET" COINED BY JANE JACOBS HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN THIS DESIGN.ACCESS FROM THE CENTRE TO THE SURROUNDING DWELLING UNITS WHICH ENCOMPASS THE MARKET SPACE ,CREATES A VIBRANT ATMOSPHERE AT THE HEART OF THE CLUSTER. THE CLUSTER DESIGN ENSURES LIGHT AND VENTILATION IN EVERY UNIT. THE AIM WAS TO CREATE A CENTRAL SPINE. THE MASTER PLAN is INFORMAL WITH INTERLINKED SPACE OF CULTURAL CONTEXT, MAINTENANCE OF HIERARCHY OF ROAD, OPEN SPACES, A CENTRAL LOCATION OF BASIC COMMUNITY SERVICES.

SEGREGATION OF VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC. OFFSETS BREAK VISUAL MONOTONY. HIERARCHY IS BASED ON THE VOLUME OF THE TRAFFIC AND ACTIVITIES. THE ROADS ARE MADE USING MIXTURE OF ASPHALT AND PLASTIC WASTE. THE SINK OF THE FOUNDATION IS LAID WITH DICARDED PLASTICS UNDER THE PLINTH BEAM

ZONING JUSTIFICATION THE 9 sqm CLUSTER HAS BEEN PLACED NEAR THE MAIN ROAD AS THE RESIDENTS OF THIS CLUSTER LIVE ON RENT AND THEY DON'T POSSESS ANY VEHICLES HENCE NEED TO BE LOCATED CLOSEST TO THE BUS STOP. COMMUNITY CENTER ,ANGANWADI LOCATED AT THE CENTER OF THE SITE SO THAT ITS EQUIDISTANT FROM ALL CORNERS. THE 25 sqm CLUSTERS ARE LOCATED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

9 SQM UNITS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE BASIC FACILITIES ,A LIVING SPACE AND COMMON TOILET+WASH 15 SQM UNITS EVOLVE INTO A SPACE WITH A KITCHEN ,BALCONY AND ATTACHED TOILET +BATH. THE ADDITIONAL FACILITIES PROVIDED IN THE 25 SQM ARE A BEDROOM ,AND A SEPARATE TOILET AND BATH.
