UNIT 4 TEST

Questions in this section are to be answered in the spaces provided. For problems requiring a numerical calculation, be certain to show all steps in your answer to receive full credit. Watch you significant digits! 1. The following aqueous solutions are placed in a beaker to test their conductivity. Identify the light bulb image that best represents the expected result of the test. 0.5M K(NO)3 0.5M Methanol (CH3OH) 0.0001M NaCl 0.5M NaCl

2.

What volume of water is needed to prepare 250.0mL of 0.8mol/L aqueous sodium sulfate from a stock solution with a concentration of 2.4mol/L?

3. 35.0mL of a 1.00mol/L KBr solution is mixed with 60.0mL of 0.600mol/L KBr. a) What is the concentration (mol/L) of the resulting solution? b) If the resulting solution is heated to evaporate water until the total volume of the solution is 50.0mL, what is the concentration (mol/L) of the final solution?

4. A solution of 100.0 mL of 0.200mol/L KOH is mixed with a solution of 200.0 mL of 0.150mol/L NiSO4. What is the maximum amount of precipitate that will be formed in this reaction?

5. Hard water contains Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions which interfere with the action of soap and leave an insoluble coating on the insides of pipes when heated. Water softeners replace these ions with Na+. a) If 1500 L of hard water contains 0.020 mol/LCa2+ and 0.0040 mol/LMg2+, how many moles of Na+ are needed to replace these ions? b) How many grams of NaCl needs to be added to deliver enough sodium to replace these ions?

6. For the following double displacement reactions: (i) Write the balanced molecular equation (ii) Write the total ionic equation for each reaction. Circle any spectator ions. (iii) Write the net ionic equation for each reaction (i) (i) (i) AgNO3(aq) Al2(SO4)3 (aq) NaH(s) + + + H2O(l) Na2CrO4(aq)

Ba(OH)2 (aq)

COMMUNICATION: 1. You are given a test tube containing a transparent, colourless solution of sodium acetate. Briefly outline how you would determine whether the solution was unsaturated, saturated or supersaturated

2. Describe the glassware and technique you would use to prepare the solution from question #2 in the inquiry section. As a part of your description, include a sketch showing the concentration of the initial solution, the volume of the initial solution used and the concentration and volume of the final solution. 3. Write two equations to show how the hydrogen carbonate ion, HCO31-, can react with water. First show the ion acting as an acid. Then show the ion acting as a base. Label the acid, base, conjugate acid and conjugate base for each equation.
