Jessica McClendon- 19 students, 3rd grade Lesson Plan for Area Unit

Common Core Standards:

MCC3.MD.5 Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
a. A square with side length 1 unit, called a unit square, is said to have one square unit of area, and can be used to measure area. b. A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.

MCC3.MD.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units). MCC3.MD.7 Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition. a. Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.

Learning Objectives: The student will be able to practice area by counting tiles and counting square units of given figures. The student must correctly identify the area of 8/10 figures to demonstrate mastery. and/ or The student will solve problems by multiplying the side lengths to determine the area. The student will solve 8/10 problems correctly to demonstrate mastery.

Essential Questions: How can I use unit squares to help me find the area of an object? What methods can I use to determine the area of an object? How are tiling to find area and multiplying side lengths to find area similar?

Activating Strategy: Show students houses and house plans on the promethean board and discuss how architects design house plans and how construction workers use house plans to build houses. Have discussion to reveal students prior knowledge of construction work and house plans. Discuss how area is related to the discussion of house plans. Learning/Teaching Activities: - The students will use the computers to get on the Area webquest I created. - The students will use the webquest to explore and practice area problems. - At the end of the webquest, the students will be given the task of using graph paper to design their own dream house. The students will look at the rubric provided on the webquest. I will also post the rubric on the promethean board. The students will use graph paper to design a dream house plan while using the rubric to make sure they include the specified criteria. The students will need to successfully identify the area of 8/10 rooms on their house plan to demonstrate mastery.

Summarizer: We will gather whole group at the carpet and the students will share their dream house plans. I will ask the students questions regarding their plans and how they determined the area of each room.
