Teacher-Mrs. Kimberly Bouchard Email- k.bouchard@sumter2.edu Work phone-(803)499-3327 High Hills Elementary-Classroom-Room 220 Office hours- 1:30-1:45 daily or by appointment **I will check my email several times a day so please feel free to ask any questions via email** Subject Description During the year students will get a comprehensive study of four major types of literary texts: fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry, and drama. In the category of fiction, they read the following specific types of texts: chapter books, adventure stories, historical fiction, contemporary realistic fiction, science fiction, picture books, folktales, legends, tall tales, and myths. In the category of literary nonfiction, they read personal essays, autobiographical and biographical sketches, and speeches. In the category of poetry, they read narrative poems, lyrical poems, humorous poems, and free verse (South Carolina Department of Education, 2013). Students in grade five read informational (expository/persuasive/argumentative) texts of the following types: essays, historical documents, informational trade books, textbooks, news and feature articles, magazine articles, advertisements, encyclopedia entries, reviews (for example, book, movie, product), journals, and speeches. They also read directions, maps, time lines, graphs, tables, charts, schedules, recipes, and photos embedded in informational texts. In addition, they examine commercials, documentaries, and other forms of nonprint informational texts (South Carolina Department of Education, 2013). The following language arts skills will also be touched upon during the semester: reading and comprehending expository text, research, note taking, essay writing, vocabulary, and listening skills. Resource, Software, and Program Requirements Students are required to have a computer with high-speed internet access (If internet access is too slow it will make it difficult to view required videos.) Students will also need access to a word processing program that will allow access to word documents and power-point. Computers need to have a program that will allow them to view videos. (example: quick-time) A movie making program is required along with a voice recording program. (examples: Windows Live Movie Maker, Audacity, and Windows Sound Record)

Grading Policy All assignments are due on the date indicated in the course outline. Any late assignment will lose 5 points for each day it is late. The following is how each assignment will be weighted: Tests 30% Quizzes Projects 25% 25%

The purpose of daily assignments is to reinforce material that has been covered each week. Parents are encouraged to look over their childs work, and to take an active part in their childs learning. All work submitted by the student must be original not copied from another source. If the student is caught plagiarizing their work it will result in receiving a zero for the assignment. If the student does use any secondary materials to support their work (materials gathered from online sources, newspapers, magazines, journals, or books) it must be properly documented and cited. Student Responsibilities Each student is required to read the class syllabus paying close attention to when assignments are due and to policies and procedures. Check class homepage daily to see if there have been updates or changes to materials and assignments. Participate in class blog trying to keep a continual dialogue between classmates and the teacher. Ask questions to the teacher via email, blog, or office hours if there is any question regarding material or assignments. Weekly in class Assignments Spelling-Beginning Week 1 Monday- Write each spelling word 10 times each during first 10 minutes of class

Tuesday- Write spelling words in a sentence that shows you understand the meaning of the word during the first 10 minutes of class Wednesday- Complete Spelling City activity during the first 10 minutes of class. www.spellingcity.com Thursday- Study spelling words at home Friday-Spelling test during class Literature Circles-Beginning Week 2 Monday-Have the chapters assigned on Friday read and job task completed prior to getting to class on Monday Wednesday- Have the chapters assigned on Monday read and job task completed prior to getting to class on Wednesday Friday- Have the chapters assigned on Wednesday read and job task completed prior to getting to class on Friday. Weekly At home Assignments Monday-Friday- Students are required to complete the daily work that is assigned on the class webpage Attendance and Assignment Requirements Students must keep up with weekly reading schedule and with any online readings posted for the week. All assignments should be sent to the teacher via email as an attachment.
