The Abyssinian Crisis

By Jonathan Revees and Kyle

Ginn!
The Start
The Abyssinian crisis started
becuase Africa was a sought-after
Country, everyone wanted a piece
of it. The fact that it was
extremely defensless,compared to
devloped countries made this
prospect even more tempting .
Countries who were after this land
were European and included such
powers as Britain and France. The
most important and useful places
were taken over, leaving the most
useless places unoccupied.

Where is Abyssinia?

Why it's there of

course!

It is in Africa, next to
Etheopia. The north is
very fertile and rich,
however the south is
uninhabited and
useless.
Invading Abyssinia
• In December of 1934, there were
problems about the border between
Absyssinia and the Italian Somilila -->
• Because of this Haile Selassie, the
emperor of Abyssinia, asked the League
Of Nations asked for help.
• In July 1935, the League banned the sale
of weapons to either side.
• In October the same year, the League's
committee stated that they thought that
Italy should own some land in Abyssinia.
• Instead, Mussolini sent his 100,000 strong
army to invade Abyssinia. -->
Britain And France's Roles

• Because of Italy's invasion, the League Of Nations asked

France and Britain for the use of their army.
• Because they didn't want to do this, they both got involved
in the Hoare-Laval pact.
• The Hoare-Laval Pact made it so that they didn't have
anything to do with what Mussolini was doing in Abyssinia.
How the League Responded

After attempting to get Britain and France to offer military

help, and failing, the League did nothing
Because of this, by May 1936, Italy had invaded all of
Abyssinia.
