Clinical Math Lesson #2: Mix and Match (Volume)

Teacher Candidate: Mr. Michael Gresham Subject/EEDA/SSCA: Mathematics (Volume) Grade: Fifth Grade Date and Time of Lesson: March 13, 2013; 9:00am

Learning Objective: When using boxes, fifth grade students will apply strategies and formulas to
determine the volume of rectangular prisms.

Alignment with Standards:

SC Academic Math Standard: 5-5.5- Apply strategies and formulas to determine the volume of rectangular prisms. Common Core Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.5.MD.C.5b- Apply the formulas V = l w h and V = b h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.

Developmental Appropriateness: Students in fifth grade are introduced to the concept of volume,
which is not touched on during any previous grade. However, the students have been introduced to volume previously this year through science. Also, the cooperating teacher has introduced the topic of volume prior to this lesson. Students should be able to bring in the prior knowledge which the students have learned and use it efficiently in this lesson activity. Students should also be able to work with their peers in a cooperative way that is in conjunction with the classroom and school-wide behavior system.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Pre-Assessment: The teacher-candidate will ask the students to come up with a list of ideas, words, phrases that remind them of volume. After discussing some of the ideas that the students have come up with, the teacher candidate will give the students an example to solve in their math notebooks. The teacher candidate will look to see how well and efficient students use the formula v = l (x) w (x) h, since they will be using the formula during the majority of the lesson. During: The students will be measuring various boxes of various sizes, so the teacher will be looking and monitoring students to see how well they are using the formula v = l (x) w (x) h. Each student will fill out a chart which involves the students finding the length, width, and height, as well as the volume. The teacher-candidate will make mental notes about how well the students are using that. Post-Assessment: After the conclusion of the lesson, the students will match the boxes to the item (or brand) that box goes with. Students will share their answers orally to the classroom. Also, students will complete a short worksheet on volume. The teacher will be looking for them to apply what they learned in math problems. Students should understand that to find the volume they use the formula v = l (x) w (x) h.

Accommodations: For slow placed learners and students who have difficulty in math, they will be
placed in groups with students who are gifted or above average in math. The teacher-candidate will keep a close watch on these students and will assist when necessary.

Materials:
Students: Students will need their math notebooks and pencils for this lesson. Teacher-Candidate: The teacher-candidate will need the boxes that the students will be using in the lesson, tape-measures (the stips), the worksheet in which the students will be using for the post assessment.

Use of Technology: The teacher-candidate will be using the smartboard to write the list at the beginning of the lesson.

Procedures:
Activating Prior Knowledge: The teacher will draw a t-chart on the smartboard while the students take their seats. When the students are seated the teacher will begin the lesson. (NCTM 5) On the board, I have a t-chart. Before we begin the lesson, I would like for you to copy this into your math notebook. Teacher-Candidate gives students the appropriate wait time. I would like for you to label this volume. Students label their charts When you see the word volume, what are some words that come to mind? Teacher allows students to answer Teacher will record the students answers on the board. Now that we have some words on the board, who remembers the formula to find the volume of a rectangular prism? Student will be chosen (by raising their hands) to answer the question. (Answer should be v = l x w x h). I have a box, which I picked up at the grocery store last night and I am curious to find the volume of this box. However, I need some help. (NCTM 4) I measured the length and it came out to be 12 cm. Then I measured the height and it came out to be 12 cm. Finally I measured the width and it came out to be 4 cm. Now that I have my measurements, I need to know the formula to find the volume, which is what? (Students should respond length x width x height). Now that I know my formula, I can plug in my numbers. What is my length? (students should respond with the answer provided) What is my width? (students should respond with the answer provided) What is my height? (students should respond with the answer provided) Now I want to plug these into my formula, so now I should have 12 cm (length) x 12cm (height) x 4 cm (width). Now to solve this, I need to work this problem out. First lets multiply the length and the width. Teacher-Candidate works the problem out on the board, so the students can see. (12 x 4 =48) Now that I have the answer, I need to multiply the product I have with the height. Teacher-Candidate works the problem out on the board, so the students can see. (48 x 12 = 576) So the volume for this box is 576cm3 Teacher-Candidate will remind students to label their units as cm3 Introduction to Activity: Now I have an activity for all of you. I have five boxes, each labeled with a letter: A,B,C,D, and E. Im going to put you into groups. (this will be done randomly). I want you and your group members to find the volume of the box in which you have, at your station. (NCTM 3) We will switch boxes every five to ten minutes and you will repeat the process. Im going to hand you each a sheet. Teacher-Candidate hands out the sheets to students. On this sheet, I want you to record the measurements of the length, width, and height of the box then find the volume and write it in the box labeled volume. (NCTM 5) I want to see all of you working together, not just a one or two people working. (NCTM 3)

Teacher-Candidate uses the cooperating teachers method of choosing student groups at random. Activity: Now that were in our groups, Im going to hand you your first box and you can begin. Remember to show your work, you can use the back of your page or a scratch piece of paper. (NCTM 5) Also, remember to work together, me and Mrs. McKee will be walking around to make sure everybody is contributing. Teacher-Candidate sets the students off. Teacher-Candidate and cooperating teacher will walk around monitoring and helping students who need assistance. Teacher-Candidate will keep track of time and will ask the students to switch boxes every five to ten minutes. Closing Activity Once all of the boxes have been measured by all of the groups, the teacher will ask the students to come back together. Now that we have all of the boxes measured, lets order them by their volume. Which box has the greatest volume? (NCTM 1) The next greatest? This will continue until we have reached the lowest volume. The boxes will be organized so the students can see them. Is there a pattern? Students will respond orally. Post-Assessment: Weve been practicing volume for a while, now I want to see how much you can do. Teacher-Candidate will hand out the short post-assessment for the students. When youre done, you can hand them to me. Lesson Re-Cap: When the majority of the students are completing their assignment the teacher-candidate will ask the students the following questions: What are the three things we look for when finding the volume? How do we know, what is given to us? (NCTM 2) Students should recall the formula and its components. What is the formula? Students should remember length x width x height.
