Immersion Plan 4 Solubility Teacher Candidate: Jennifer Haynie Subject and grade: Science/5th Date and Time: March

h 27, 2013, 11:30am Learning Objective: Students will explore how temperature affects the solubility of a sugar cube in water. Alignment with Standards: 5-4.6 Explain how temperature change, particle size, and stirring affect the rate of dissolving. 5-2.1 Identify independent (manipulated), dependent (responding), and controlled variables in an experiment. Assessment of the Objective: (Pre) At the beginning of the lesson, I will introduce the experiment we are going to complete. They will be given a handout that goes along with the lesson. Before the experiment is started, they will have to identify the manipulated and responding variables and come up with a hypothesis. (During) I will use a checklist system in which I walk around to each group during the experiment to ask questions and check their results. (Post) After the experiment is completed, they must write a conclusion based on what their data showed them. They also have to state if their hypothesis was correct or incorrect and explain why. Prerequisites: Students need to know the difference between manipulated and responding variables, and the terms independent and dependent. Accommodations: There are no special needs students, or ESL students who need accommodations. There are a few behavioral issues that I have addressed by selecting their groups ahead of time. Materials: Each group of 3 will need: 3 styrofoam cups, 3 sugar cubes, 1 craft stick, thermometer, ice water, room temperature water, a source for hot water, solubility handout, and a pencil Reference: AIMS Education Foundation Use of Technology: N/A Procedures: Introduction: When you walk in today you will notice that I have some name cards with 3 different names on each. You will need to quietly find which group you belong to.

Today we are going to complete an experiment and I have a question on the board that I want you to pay close attention to for the whole time. How does temperature affect the solubility of a cube of sugar in water? This is a sugar cube. We will be conducting an investigation that focuses on how TEMPERATURE affects how quickly the cube will dissolve in water. You will be given 3 different cups of water. One cup will have ice cold water, the second cup will have room temperature water, and the third cup will have hot water. On your solubility sheet, the first 2 questions ask for the manipulated variable and the responding variable. Does anyone know what these are? A manipulated variable is the variable that you are changing in the experiment. (water temp.) Who can tell me what a responding variable is? A responding variable is the variable that can change during the experiment, as a result of the manipulated variable. (rate of solubility) I want to remind you that you can only test one variable at a time or it will mess up your experiment. So make sure that you are stirring at the same speed for each cup or your results will not be accurate. On your solubility sheet, it asks for the manipulated and responding variables and your hypothesis. You may work with your group but each one of you needs to write on your own sheet. Experiment Each group should have a stopwatch and stirring stick already, but I will call one student out of each group to come get materials. (I will call each group to get cups of water and the sugar cube) Your first cup of water is ice cold water. You need to take the temperature of your water and record it on your data table. Get your timer ready and drop your sugar cube in the cup. Have 1 group member stir the water until it appears that it is completely dissolved. Make sure you stir consistently and make sure you are keeping up with you start time (which will be 0 each time) and stop time so you can record you results on your data table. (I will repeat this part 2 more times, using room temperature water and then hot water. Students will come each time to get their new materials.) Ending Questions When you are done with the experiment, there are 2 questions under your data table that you need to answer. What did your data tell you about how temperature affects solubility of a sugar cube? Was your hypothesis correct? Be sure to explain why or why not. Conclusion (I will ask these next few questions as a class discussion) Why is it important to only test one variable at a time? (Experiment will not be accurate) What is the difference between the manipulated variable and the responding variable? How did the temperature of the water affect the solubility? Does anyone have anything they would like to share or any questions?
