What are some ways to use Wikis that are useful in the classroom? Why should teachers use Wikis in their classes? What types of assignments can students complete using Wikis?

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES EXTENDED OBJECTIVES

Participants will be have a basic knowledge of the schools website, provided teacher webpages, and wikis and how to use them appropriately in their classes. Teachers will be able to use their webpage and wiki to: present information to their students; communicate information to parents; teach their students how to design their own wiki; provide variety in assignments and assessments their students produce on their own; allow learners to share their knowledge with classmates and the world; model digital literacy to their students; help students with limited access to computers become more digitally literate.

RESOURCES NEEDED

Computer for instructor and participants Examples of teacher webpage on schools website Examples of wikis by teachers and students Prior to session email participants and ask them to make sure they know their passwords to get into their teacher webpages on the schools website.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Introduce the idea of using their teacher webpage on the schools website. Demonstrate various items that teachers can add to their webpages and reasons why it is necessary. Have participants sign in to the school webpage and add various items to their teacher pages. Show various examples of wikis for classrooms, teachers, and projects made by students. Have all participants sign-up for a PBWorks account. Give time for participants to create their own wiki. Review and discuss any issues or questions that arise.

EXTENSION IDEA

Have teachers compile links to their own wikis and exemplary student wikis into one wiki for all to access for ideas.
