general goals of LESSON long term: Enable students understanding of the science-related phenomenas occurring in the space around them. short term: Facilitate an experiment that leads to deeper connections and understanding of subject content. specific goals of lesson long term: Have students recognize the science-related process that occurs when a rainbow forms

short term: Allow students to create the colors of the rainbow by manipulating other colors and discuss the predictions and findings with their peers.

1. title of Research Lesson: The colors of the rainbow

2. standards addressed:

3. background of the LESSON: The students have briefly discussed when rainbows are present, what is needed to create a rainbow in the sky. The students have also identified the colors that make up a rainbow.

Introduction

T: Today we will be doing a little science lesson on colors and the rainbow. I know you all learned about rainbows a couple of weeks ago so were going to first review what we know about rainbows, then talk about colors, and end with a short experiment involving mixing colors and color changes. T: If everyone can get out their science book were going to start off with a short reading. Please turn to page B38. Who can read the first page out loud for the class? ASR: Student will read. T: Okay, who will read the second page? ASR: Student will read the page. T: Alright, lets review. When does a rainbow occur? ASR: When there is sun and

Students will be sitting at their desk listening to the teacher.

Story Overview: Review what happened in the story through a sequence of events: beginning, middle, and end.

rain. T: Provide feedback. Okay now what are the colors of the rainbow again? ASR: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Indigo, and Violet. 18 min Experiment T: Very good boys and girls. Now were going to do a little science activity. Before we start, I need everyone to clear off their desks completelyputting everything away. Ill be looking for the first table to be all ready and waiting quietly to begin. Okay in this experiment we will be mixing primary colors- like red, blue, and yellow to make secondary colors until weve made the colors of the rainbow. Then we will use the colors we made to paint with to make rainbow toast for a fun, colorful snack! Each table will get a cup of red milk, a cup of blue milk, and a cup of yellow milk. Then you will get 3 empty cups. First we will be working with the red and the yellow milk. I want you to talk with your table now Students will need nothing on their desk and will use the materials provided.

about what color you think will be made when you pour some red milk into the empty cup then add yellow milk to it. Okay now someone from each table carefully pour the milk. Continue with blue and yellow then red and blue. ASR: The student will complete the experiment. T: Okay everyone before we begin to paint our toast lets talk about what colors we made. What did you get when you mixed the red and blue? ASR: Purple. T: And what about the red and yellow? ASR: Orange. T: And the blue and yellow? ASR: Green. T: Great job boys and girls you were right and we made the colors of the rainbow. Now we can begin to paint our toast. Im looking for the first table ready to be called up to get their toast. ASR: Students will be ready and waiting T: Okay boys and girls you can

take turn using the paintbrushes provided and paint the rainbow on your toast. 5 min Conclusion T: Great job today boys and girls we were able to learn that rainbows are formed when the rain and sun interact and they form 6 different colors- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. We were then able to mix primary colors like red, yellow, and blue to make other colors like orange, purple, and green. Now while I come around to clean up the colored milk I need someone to hand out these coloring sheets please. ASR: Student will hand out papers. T: Now Id like you all to color the egg in the colors we made today and when youre all done you can put your sheet in the basket and we can hand them up for spring! Students will discuss at their desks as a class and work on the sheet provided using their markers or crayons.

6. evaluation:

(How will you know whether or not you have achieved your short-term specific goals? What did the childrens responses to this lesson tell you about whether your goals were met? The children were actively engaged the entire lesson. They were filled with energy and willingness to participate in the experiment. Furthermore, the students were willing to answer questions and volunteer to help with the lesson. The students were able to correctly answer questions and connect with material they previously learned by explaining such findings with their fellow students.

7. post-lesson reflection:

What would you change about this lesson and why would those changes improve it?

I would cut out the reading portion as it was quick and unnecessary considering the students already knew all the information provided within the reading. I would use the time gained from cutting out this portion of the lesson to better explain the egg coloring worksheet and make the connection of using the colors of the rainbow that were just discussed in lesson towards the worksheet.

How did your organization and materials affect the success of the lesson?

Having the supplies ready for the children was a big help to moving the lesson smoothly. Furthermore, being prepared with two toasters was a big help in speeding up the toaster process.

What were some challenges with this lesson? What surprised you?

One of the challenges was the students noise level and having to raise my voice to be heard. The students were very excited for the lesson and their level of loudness showed that. I was surprised at how well the students listened to instruction considering the noise level.

additional comments?

I felt the lesson was overall good- could have used more focus on science material content.
