DESIGN OF COMBINED RECTANGULAR FOOTING

Design a rectangular combined footing for the two columns shown in fig. q a = 6000
lb/ft2 .The bottom of footing is 6 below grade. fc = 3000 psi fy = 60,000 psi.
Solution:

Calculations:
Assume 4' - Thickness

h = 48

d=43.5

qe = 6000 (600) - (200) = 5200 lb/ft2

Areq =

270 + 230 + 350 + 300

= 221.15 ft 2

x=
= 9.23'
1150
Length of footing = (9.23)(2) = 18.46
The required width is =

221.15
=11.95'
18.5

The net upward soil pressure

= 7.97 x 12 = 95.64 k/ft
Location of resultant:
Va = 0

Use 18.5
use 12 width

Vb = -(512.66)(1.5)+(1.5)(95.64) =
-625.53 k
Vc = - 625.53 + (95.64)(13.25) =
641.7 k
Vd = 641.7 (500)(2) + (95.64)(2) =
-167.35 k
Ve = -167.35 + (2.25)(71.82) = 0.02
Vbc = -(x)(306)(1.5) + (95.64 )(1.75)(x)
Vdc = -(x)(71.82) + (x-2.25)(345)
Putting Vbc = 0
x = 8.04 ft
Now putting Vdc = 0
x = 2.16 ft
From figure Max moment = Mmax = 2514.66 k-ft
Shear
At a distance d to the left of the left face of the interior column.
43.5
Vu = 641.7
(95.64) = 295.005 k
12
At a distance d from right of point B
Vu = 625.53 +

43.5
95.64 = 278.835 k
12

Now design shear strength

Vc = 0.85 2

f cb d

= 0.85 2 3000 12 12 43.5

= 583.258 k

Therefore d = 43.5 is O.K

=12.25 ft

Vu = column load soil pressure within the perimeter

= 769 (3.312 x 5.624 x 7.97) = 620.54 k
Design shear strength
Vc = (0.85)(4

f c)bo d

= ( 0.85) 4 3000 (12.25)(12 )( 43.5)

=1190.77 k
