Collecting, Displaying and Analyzing Data Chapter Project

Throughout our next chapter, we will be working on a project in groups. We will complete all of the work on this project in class except for the survey. You will meet with your group 4 different times throughout the chapter - one time to discuss what your topic will be for your project and the rest of the days to add in information that has been learned in class. At the end of the chapter, you will be giving a 3-5 minute presentation on the work your group did explaining the topic you chose, and the work you did analyzing your chosen topic. Objectives: Conduct a survey and create a frequency table from collected information Display the data collected in a graph bar graph or histogram Display the data in a stem-and-leaf plot or a box-and-whisker plot Display measures of central tendency to analyze collected data mean, median, mode, range. Which measure of central tendency best describes your data? Display sampling methods and discuss if your sample is biased or unbiased Present the final poster to the class

Materials: Poster Pencils, colored pencils, markers, glue, white paper, colored paper Construction paper Solid white paper

Procedures: 1. Assign students into groups of 4 or 5 2. Have students randomly pick out a topic that has already been chosen by Mr. Hudson and Ms. Martinelli 3. Students will conduct a survey on their given topic and will receive a due date for their survey. Each group member will need to survey 10-15 people. 4. Students will have three other days in class to work on their project to add in graphs, measures of central tendency, and other concepts that have been learned. Students will need to analyze their data using these concepts. 5. Students will present their posters to the class. They will have 3-5 minutes to explain the work they did to the class and the way they analyzed their collected data. Due Dates: Thursday, November 29th Survey Due Friday, December 14th Projects Due Monday, December 17th Wednesday, December 19th Project Presentations

Project Rubric
CATEGORY Use of Class Time 4
Used time well during each class period. Focused on getting the project done with other members of their group. Never distracted others. The poster is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout, and neatness.

3
Used time well during each class period. Usually focused on getting the project done with group and never distracted others. The poster is attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness.

2
Used some of the time well during each class period. There was some focus on getting the project done, but occasionally distracted others. The poster is acceptably attractive though it may be a bit messy.

1
Did not use class time to focus on the project OR often distracted others.

Attractiveness

The poster is distractingly messy or very poorly designed. It is not attractive.

Poster Presentation

The poster includes a graph. The graph is properly labeled with a scale, title, and an x-axis and y- axis. The graph is easy to read and understand. The poster includes a box-and-whisker plot or a stem-and-leaf plot. The plot is properly drawn and is given a title and a legend if it is a stem-andleaf plot. The poster includes all 4 measures of central tendency including mean, median, mode, and range. The numerical values are all correct. The poster includes a frequency table and the table correctly displays the data collected. The table is labeled properly with a title. The poster includes the sampling method used and discussed the bias of the survey. The sampling method and bias of the survey was correct. Group presentation is 35 minutes and explains what the students learned from the data they collected.

The poster includes a graph. The graph is labeled, but is missing one or more labels. The graph is easy to read and understand. All graphics are related to the topic and most make it easier to understand. All borrowed graphics have a source citation. The poster includes all 4 measures of central tendency including mean, median, mode, and range. Only 3 of the numerical values are correct. The poster includes a frequency table and the table displays the data collected. The table is not labeled properly. The poster includes the sampling method used and the bias of the survey, but either the method or given bias is incorrect. Group presentation is 35 minutes, but does not fully explain what the students learned from the data collected.

The poster includes a graph. The graph is not labeled. The graph is easy to read and understand.

The poster includes a graph, but is not labeled and is not easy to read and understand.

The poster includes a box-and-whisker plot or a stem-and-leaf-plot and is not properly drawn, but it has a title and/or legend if needed. The poster includes 2 or 3 measures of central tendency.

The poster includes a box-and-whisker plot or a stem-and-leaf-plot and is not properly drawn and does not have a title and/or legend if needed. The poster includes 1 measure of central tendency.

The poster includes a frequency table, but the table does not display all of the data collected. The table is labeled. The poster includes the sampling method used, but does not discuss the bias of the survey.

The poster includes a frequency table, but all of the data is not displayed. The table is not labeled. The poster does not include a sampling method, but does discuss the bias from the survey. Group presentation is 2 minutes or less, but does not fully explain what the students learned from the data collected.
